DUNEDIN RACES PROGRAMME FOR MONDAY The summer meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club will open at Wingatui on Monday and conclude on Tuesday. The fields are all well filled, and the class of horse engaged is well above the average attracted to Wingatui at this time of the year. The track is certain to be holding after a long period of wet weather. The win and place system will again be in use, and the following horses can be expected to race prominently:— Otokia Hurdles —McHeath, Recollection, Song Boy. Trial Handicap—Disband, Turaki, Great Baby. Dunedin Handicap—Aranui, Prudent Prince, Moneymore. Federal Handicap—Lady Leigh, Valmarch, Rodeur. Otago Handicap—Sovereign Lady, Milford, Valantua. Milburn Handicap—Spanish Lad. Waitoru, Withdrawal. Burnside Handicap—Second Innings, Norseman. Pink Robe. Salisbury Handicap—Thermidor, Passaform. Master Dingle. The progrmame is as follows: 12—

SOUTHLAND NOTES RIDERS FOR WINGATUI [THE PRESS Special Service.l INVERCARGILL, December 21. Riding engagements for the Dunedin meeting include the following;— R. E. Humphries—Waitoru, Jedburgh, Ardmayle (second day). G. Barclay—Blissful Lady, Doubleack. C. Humphries—Milford. T. J. Boyle—King Willow. H. Phillips—Ardmayle (first day). Both Sparkle and Colonel Rouge are spelling on their owner’s farm. Sparkle will be given a chance to build up in condition and although Colonel Rouge has been nominated for southern holiday meetings he is unlikely to carry out these engagements. Baltruin has had to be eased in his work because of an injured joint but was out doing easy work yesterday. There is, however, every chance of his racing at the Wyndham meeting and if the tracks continue as at present he will be well suited in this direction. Mona’s Song Although Mona’s Song won on an easing track in her last appearance her chances at Wingatui are likely to be prejudiced by the going. The Songbird mare has shown that she is unsuited to a heavy track. Brilliant Boa’s track works suggests that he will be a winner before long. The Balboa gelding has not been hurried and has been staying on in his work. Coroner is now a member of F. Langford’s team at Winton. and it is likely that he will be raced across country this season. ' Since raced at the Southland meeting last month Silkwood has gone on the right way and during the holidays will be ridden by the Riverton apprentice. P. J. Boyle. Western Song was not paid up for in the hurdle race the first day at Wingatui, but there is nothing amiss with him, and he will contest the hurdle events at the Southland meeting. King Willow has attracted attention by his dashing schooling displays at headquarters during the last week. Although he has not yet raced over hurdles he is capable of showing up at Dunedin next week. E. J. Jennings, who was rather seriously injured when he was heavily thrown in a schooling bout on Saturday morning, is reported to be making good progress. It will be several months, however, before he is able to resume riding. At the Southland Racing Club’s New Year meeting a new type of hurdle will be in use. The top rail will be firmly padded and the fence will be made secure by two iron pins at the back of it. ' Twelve foot guard rails will also be used. At Wyndham Boswell is not engaged at Dunedin and his next appearance will be at

{AUCKLAND R.C. PROGRAMME FOR MONDAY AUCKLAND, December 23. The weather has been showery to-day and the track may be easy for the opening of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting at Ellerslic on Monday, as a good deal of rain has fallen lately. However, the outlook appears favourable and unless the weather remains wet the conditions should be good. Horses likely to be well supported are:— Queen’s Plate: Beaupartir, Du Maurier, Old Bill. Grafton Hurdles: En Tour, . Charade. Mio Lume. Great Northern Foal Stakes: High Caste. Beaulivre, Konneta. Auckland Cup: Quadroon. The Buzzer. Wotan. Robinson Handicap; Blonde, Princess. White Gold, Valdene. Railway Handicap: Disdain. Te Hero, Smoke Screen. Nursery Handicap: Valerian, Silver Stick, Orelio. Christmas Handicap: Defaulter, Trench Fight, Paddy the Rip. Brackets are:—Robinson Handicap, Good Passage and Great Flight; Railway Handicap, Whirling and Rollicker, Marie’s Acre and Philcourt. The programme is as follows: 11.49 a.m.—

Wyndham. The Balboa stallion has done everything right in his work since he won at the Southland meeting last month in convincing style. On this occasion he rather surprised his connexions as he had not done as well as expected before the meeting. He was not nominated for the Dunedin meeting as it was not wished to run the risk of his going off colour again with the travelling. R. E. McLellan has raced Boswell very lightly and the wisdom of this policy is apparent by his present condition.

MANAWATU E.C. PROGRAMME FOR TO-DAY [THE PRESS Special Service.! WELLINGTON, December 23. Exceptionally good fields are carded for the opening of the Manawatu meeting at Awapuni, probably the best the club has ever had. Particularly keen contests are promised in the cup and Fitzhorbert Handicap. and an additional factor that will make the racing better and keener will be the presence of most of the leading jockeys. There has been a lot of rain in the district during the last week or two, but given fine weather on the day the going should be in excellent order. Betting will be single pool, and the only bracket on the card is a bracket of three in the Nursery Handicap: Varimond, Sleeveless, and Sunola. The following horses may be suported:— Maiden Plate—Yours Truly and Colonel Bogey. Tokomaru Hlgh-weight—Nereus and Erebus. Tararua Handicap—Rarotonga and Royal Choice. Manawatu Cup—Happy Landing and Peerless. Nursery Handicap—Globe Trotter and the Varimond bracket. Gillies’ Handicap—Hagen and Phalanx. '' Fitzherbert Handicap—Lucullus Lad and Laughing Lass. Grandstand Handicap—Lady Montana and Jazz Boy. The programme is as follows;—,

WESTPORT T.C. MONDAY’S PROGRAMME The Westport Trotting Club’s meeting will be commenced on Monday. The programme is as follows:

TURF GOSSIP Overdue The Nightmarch gelding Roaming won a hack double at the Manawatu summer meeting 12 months ago, and at the autumn meeting he ran third to Lucullus Lad and Siegmund in the Tamatete Handicap. Roaming, who now races in the colours of Mr E. L. Riddiford, raced fairly well at his last start at Feilding, and as he was running on at the end of seven furlongs he may get some money at Awapuni, which is apparently a track he favours. Well Placed Trench Fight won the Christmas Handicap at Auckland last year with 9-0, and has 9-3 this year. The race is regarded as a “snip” for Defaulter, and he has been given a fine chance with 8- He has to give Gay Son 81b. When handicapped for the Riccarton Handicap on the first day of the New Zealand Cup meeting, Defaulter had 9- (7-7 minimum) giving the whole field weight, and this was before his success in the Derby and Canterbury Cup. Many good judges are prepared to say Defaulter ranks with the best class of three-year-olds ever seen in New Zealand. First of Progeny

One or two of the Night Raid horse Wheriko’s progeny have lately been making an appearance in nomination lists, and another of them is Gymnotus, who is an acceptor for the Nursery Handicap at Awapuni to-day. Gymnotus is a brown gelding out of the Arausio mare Miss Araudille, who comes through the same branch of the Mermaid family as Medley (dam of Limerick and Ballymena), and he is to be raced by his breeder, Mr M. W. Higginson, of Waikanae. A Health Trip Arrangements have been made for the Campbelltown Handicap winner Denis to spell in New Zealand. When Denis broke down a few days before the Epsom Handicap, his leg trouble seemed to be serious enough to prewvA \v\a vacvwg. tor a long time. He has made a good recovery, but his owner, Mr G. Lightford, believes that, before he is placed in training again, a spell in Now Zealand paddocks would do him good. Ho will bo turned out at Wcslmcrc. where Lo Zingaro and other Australian horses have recently been spelled.

By Dominion Sires The winner of each division of the Waipa Plate at Te Rapa last week. Imperial Eagle and Kakarere respectively, is a three-year-old, and each is by a colonial-bred stallion. Imperial Eagle is a brown colt by the Brazen horse Bronze Eagle, winner of the New Zealand and Great Northern Derbies, and is out of the General Latour —Rhodium mare Queen of the Earth, a Juliet descendant and the dam previously of Imperial Prince. He is owned by his breeder, Mr E. Grimmond, of Otaua, Waiuku, for whom he is trained by F. R. Foster at Pukekohc. Before Te Rapa he had raced only three times. Kakarere is a brown filly by the hucullus horse King Lu, winner of the Great Northern Guineas, and is out ot the Swift Flight—Kakama mare, Rukatere a half-sister to Quinkama, the dam of Namakia and Suleiman This is the' Winnie family again, which has lately been doing so well in the north. Kakarere is being raced on lease by Mr W. J. Corrigan, of Mornnsville. for whom she is being trained at Te Rapa by A Winder. Like Imperial Eagle, she had raced only three times previously. Penalised Dropped Catch and Palastyle, dual winners at the Turf Club s meeting last Monday, will both _ have 141 b penalty in their races at Waiau next Monday.

A Likely Candidate Dictate is definitely to start in the Auckland Cup on Monday, and although a change of riders was thought likely, L. J. Ellis will have the mount. In a gallop on Tuesday with Willie Win. ridden by Ellis, Dictate, ridden by G. Humphries, gave a very encouraging display, and it was following this that Ellis desired to carry out his earlier arrangement to ride the Riccarton gelding.

WAIPUKURAU J.C. PROGRAMME FOR MONDAY [THE PRESS Special Service.! WELLINGTON, December 23. Single pool betting will operate at the Waipukurau Jockey Club’s meeting on Monday. The following horses may race well: — Maiden Race: Halley and Royal Ace. Juvenile Handicap; Hui and Madonna. Amalgamation Hack Cup: Granvale and True. Braeburn Hack Handicap: Nelumbo and Imogen. Hunter Handicap: Manawatu and Buster Brown. Novice Race: Jacynth and Taparau. Flying Handicap; Pladle and Fossicker. Porangahau Handicap—Centrepoise and True. The programme is as follows:

TROTTING NOTES Reminders Acceptances for the first day of the Canterbury Park meeting will close at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Acceptances for the first day of the Greymouth Trotting Club’s midsummer meeting will close on Thursday at 8 p.m. The first race at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Monday next will be started at 11.45 a.m. Special trains will leave Christchurch at 9.20, 9.35, and 9.50 a.m. Starting Times

Starting times for the events at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Tuesday have been arranged as follows:—12.0, Selby Handicap; 12.45, December Handicam 1.30, Grandstand Handicap; 2.15, Auckland Trotting Cup; 3.5, Akarana Handicap; 3.50, Rowe Memorial Handicap; 4.35, Christmas Handicap; 5.20, £>t. Heliers Handicap. Bracketed Horses At the Gore meeting the following horses will be bracketed on the totaljsator;—Gore Cup: Sydney Grand and Gold Bank; E. A. Pigeon Memorial Handicap; Jolly Queen and Prince Charles, Happy Locanda and Grand Meteor. Ghancji and Glen Guy. Stewards’ Handicap: Provincial and Diosma. Trousseau and Mendel, Central Lad and Young Dewey. Final Handicap: Silver Laddie and Master Potts. An Unlikely Starter Harold Guy, trained by R. J. Humphreys. is an unlikely starter in the Gore Cup, for which he was one of the early favourites. Harold Guy did not accept for the Winton Cup. The Starter Mr A. J. Hastings, of Christchurch, will be the starter at the Winton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday next. Mr F. Legat, who usually acts in this capacity, has been indisposed. Southland Notes Irish Guy, a good type of novice, has joined F. Langford’s stable at Winton. This Adioo Guy mare may not be long in showing up among the novice fields. Melrose scored very easily at the Southland meeting, and when next produced among the improvers she should be able to hold her own. By Sungod she is out of Lee Rose, and has not done a great amount of racing. Kid Wolf created a good impression when he won two races and was three times placed in six starts last season as a three-year-old. The Wellington Direct gelding ran a sound race to be placed over two miles and has since been doing good work at Winton. There are several very likely improvers racing at the present time, and Kid Wolf’s credentials are as good as any.

A Promising Pacer At Gore on Monday Katene will be given two chances to qualify for the Winton Cup. If the Great Bingen gelding fails in the A. E. Pigeon Memorial Cup he will be produced later ifi the day in the sprint race. There is no horse engaged at Gore with better prospects of winning a race than Katene and in the event of his taking his place in the Winton Cup he is certain to be one of the favourites. Katene is by far the best of Lady Marvin’s produce, which include Leeway, a good winner at the square gait, Marvin Dillon, Marvin Lee, and Tonty Dillon. Lady Marvin was by Marvin Wilkes from a mare by Bellman. This maternal line is not one to enthuse over, but Marvin Dillon, Katene, and Leeway have all been winners, and Katene promises to go a long way in the handicaps, as he can both sprint and stay. In many ways he resembles his sire, Great Bingen, one of the finest pacers ever bred in this country. Doubtful Starter Orovale is a doubtful starter in the Winton Juvenile Stakes, as the Hey de Oro filly recently went sore in training. The Novices Refeer, a member of A. McLeod’s team at Milton, is better bred than most of the novices he will meet at Gore. He is a five-year-old gelding by Great Bingen from Lydia, by Wrack from Gianella, the dam of Nell Pointer, Latona, Gibraltar, Lingfield, Red Spur, and others. Gianella, who had a record of 2min 13sec and 4min 36sec, was by Quincey (a son of Vancleve), from Queen V, by Kentucky from Harold’s Rest, by King Harold. In Trousseau and Mendel, D. Kerr has two likely novices engaged at the holiday meetings. Trousseau is a four-year-old mare by Worthy Bond from Jenny Bell, Jun., the dam of Special Sun, Regal, Silver Guy, and others. Jenny Bell, Jun., was by Four Chimes from Jenny Bell, who left Bell Harold, White Sun, Morning Sun, Sunny Gold, and Captain Wallace. Mendel is a four-year-old by Adioo Guy from Great Bell, a square trotter, who took a two mile record of 4min 42 4-ssec some years back. Great Bell was by Great Audubon from Myrtle Bell, the dam of Thea, Rothbell, Haere Ra, QuoVadis, Jean Mack, Thalia, Candabell, Sunbell. etc.

WYNDIIAM R.C. ACCEPTANCES (FRS39 iSSOCIATIOV TELEGRAM.) INVERCARGILL* December 23, The Wyndham Racing Ciub has TeceWeti the following acceptances for its annua, meeting on January 2:— 12. 15 p.m.—

Stewards’ Hack Handicap: Ruling Lady, Gold Glare, Screen Star. The programme is as follows:

HOLIDAY HOPES AWAPUNI AND ELLERSLEE THE BREEDING OF BIRTHDAY BOY (By CARBINE.) North Island racing clubs are almost assured of highly successful holiday meetings. Fields generally will be large and of satisfactory quality. So far we have had a poor summer, but there is hone of the weather clearing before Christmas. Although the rain has been unseasonable it has prevented the tracks and courses from becoming so hard that there is any likelihood of fields being depleted through horses going muscle sore. Most of the leading Christmas handicaps are rightly regarded as very open, among them the Auckland Onp and Railway Handicap, and the Manawatu Cup. While the lightly-weighted Birthday Boy has a big following for the Auckland Cup, and should be nearly a certainty if he can stay, there is also a strong disposition to favour the chances of the proved stayers, particularly Willie Win and The Buzzer, and to give Quadroon serious consideration. The fact that Birthday Boy is handicapped at the minimum weight is sufficient indication of his performance, but he has given much promise, and has been working attractively. He is well bred and is related, through his dam, to Te Kara, who ran second in The Banker’s New Zealand Cup, deadheated with Muraahi in the 1923 Auckland Cup, and won the race outright in the following year. Birthday Boy was sired by Limond. His dam, Queen March, was by Lucullus, with Marble Arch and Musket figuring in her pedigree, so the Stud Book furnishes no reason why he should not stay. Of the Railway Handicap candidates who have raced recently in the Wellington area, none has pleased more than Smoke Screen, but he should find difficulty in conceding 221 b and administering a beating to Disdain, whose brilliance should enable her to set all her opponents a very stiff task. Courtcraft, inclined to grossness, was below his best when he raced at Woodville, and his trainer might have difficulty in getting this fine-looking four-year-old ready in time. Beaulivre can be expected to unwind all the speed he has revealed in the past when he contests the Great Northern Foal Stakes. He may run the race right out. but consideration should be given to the fact that the distance will be six furlongs (not five, as were earlier contests), and that the stayerbred High Caste has shaped like a

No doubt Defaulter will start a' hot favourite in the Derby, but aa Beaupartir has improved since he raced at Riccarton last month, he is expected to keep the big southerner busy. Beaupartir is to contest the first race of the meeting, the Queen’s Plate, an event which should find him very prominent at the finish. White Gold, who, like Beaupartir, belongs to Mr T. H. Lowry, ought to, run a great race , in the Robinson Handicap. Mr Lowry has other promising young horses in Millament and Chevy Chase, but his two best prospects appear io be Beaupartir in the Queen’s Plate and White £sold in the Robinson Handicap. Silver Stick (by Beau Rule, a daughter of Silver Link) is a possibility among the handicap two-year-olds. In his only race he fully extended Globe Trotter. Light-weights might take a hand in the decision of this year’s Manawatu Cup,. and' the pick of the lower division look to be Happy Landing, Peerless, and Conveyer. Probably the best of the Upper division will be Wild Chase. The best recent form of the open sprinters engaged at the Manawatu meeting draw? attention to the chances of Counterblast, Majority, Laughing Lass, and Rakahanga, especially that of Counterblast. In other events Baran, Globe Trotter, Sternchase, Hagen, and Little Dorrit should command attention. If reasonably placed Sternchase and Little Dorrit certainly should win during the holidays. -
