PORTRAITS OF MAORIS

ART EXHIBITION IN LONDON LONDON, December 5. Two fine portraits of Maoris by Mr H. Linley Richardson, R.B.A. (formerly of Palmerston North), have been hung in the annual exhibition of the Royal Society of British Artists. One is entitled “In the Maori Meeting House.” It is an excellent head and shoulders study of a native, aged, wrinkled, and tattooed, and with jet black hair, making a flax mat. The other is "Old Maori Woman by Pohutukawa Bushes.” The vivid red blossom is set as a 'background to a venerable grey head, tattooed, and with long greenstone earrings. Both portraits are colourful and attractive. They are valued at 60 guineas each. Mr Richardson also has a third picture hung—a water colour, “On the Beach.” It is a violent change from the sedateness of the two portraits, being somewhat kaleidoscopic in effect Its value is 18 guineas.
