ALLEGED PLOT IN IRELAND
♦ Republican Leaders Arrested ATTACKS ON MINISTERS FEARED (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION COPYRIGHT.) (Received December 23, 11 p.m.) LONDON, December 23. The Belfast correspondent of the “Daily Mail” declares the leaders of the Irish Republican Army in Northern Ireland were arrested as a result of a plot against the life of the Prime Minister (Lord Craigavon) and other members of the Cabinet. Zero hour was to have been January 1, The Ministry for Home Affairs has issued a statement saying that the Irish Republican Army was prepared for attacks on prominent persons and also on Government and other property, during Christmas and New Year. It was therefore decided that there was no alternative but to arrest and intern well-known leaders. Thirty-four leaders so far have been arrested. The police guards on public buildings have been doubled and members of the Cabinet are provided with a bodyguard. Those arrested are held In the Belfast gaol, and after questioning, will be interned under the Civil Authorities (Special Powers) Act.
