PRIZE LIST Our Christmas Competitions

This year our special Christmas competitions drew unusually heavy entries, and the judges were laced with a difficult task. There was a large number of classes, too, and though this gave greater scope to competitors it made the work of judging more difficult. Some classes, oi course, were more popular than others. It speaks well for the spirit of our country that the “Pioneer Story” brought some of the best entries. “Christmas Carols” (with music), too, were good. Lady Gay had not expected so many entries of so high a standard.

In addition to the prizes awarded each member whose work is printed, either in this special Christmas number, or in

New Zealand before many years are gone. Now, for the prize list: Drawing (Any Christmas Subject) Bae Merrin, Fendalton, 1; Judy Hanna, Fendalton, 2. Poems Christmas Senior: Vivienne Brown, Devon street; Junior; Elizabeth O’Korke, Lake Coleridge. Ballad Lyndall Gow, PapanuL Carol Beverley Stoop, Oamaru, 1; Therese Tangey, Morven, 2; Peter Scott, St. Albans, 3. “Our Christmas” St. John. Moody, St. Albans. the first edition of “The Gay Gazette” after New Year, will receive a “Highly Commended” certificate. The very, best of the work sent in has been selected for these two numbers. Finally, congratulations to the prize-winners, and to all who sent in contributions.' There was often so little to choose between two excellent efforts that the judges have been counting grey hairs ever since. Two of our senior prize-winners, ’Mate Tarawera and Vivienne Brown, appear for the last time as competitors on our page, since both will reach the age limit before next year. We wish them well in the future, and hope to see their names on the literary scroll of

Beach, 2; Mary Weir, Shirley, 3; Catherine Murchison, Lake Coleridge, 4. Drawing Funny Pudding: Daphne Merrin, Fendalton, 1; Shirley Mytton, Motukarara, 2. "Ernest Keeps Christmas”: Margaret Josling, 1; Walter Bradshaw, Beckenham, 2.

standing work, both in club work, Christmas Mission work, and literary and art work. The gold “Press Ship” badge has previously been won by Valerie Barker, Woodend. It was exceedingly difficult to judge this contest, and Lady Gay would have liked to have given 50 badges. Mearn s Stewart and Edith Worrall, Betty Forrester, ’Mate Billabong, Prudence Mitchell, Elaine and Geraldine Dennis, Beverley Stoop, Janice Mulligan, Peter Scott, and Kathleen Sheat were all in the running. Others had exceedingly high records. The silver “Press Ship,” for the highest average of art work during the year was won by Daphne Merrin, with Mearn Stewart a runner-up, and the badge for the highest average of literary work by Prudence Mitchell, Cashmere, and Beverley Stoop, Oamaru, with Edith Worrall, Richmond, Keith Frampton, Wakanui, Wai Thomas, Taumutu, Patricia Widdowson, Prebbleton, and others well to the fore. The Points Book prize was won by Geraldine, Elaine, and Clive Dennis, and a special prize for the best “Press Ship” reports sent in by any “Press Ship” club reporter goes to Shirley Everest, Rainbow Club, Springston.
