MAGISTRATE’S COURT
# FRIDAY (Before Mr E. C. Lewey, S.M.) REMANDED Martha Jane Thompson and Charlotte Thompson were charged with stealing textile goods, a toy, and toilet articles, of a total value of 15s, the property of J. R. McKenzie, Ltd., on December 22. Violet Annie Thompson was charged with stealing a lady’s felt hat valued at 7s 6d, the property of Millers, Ltd., on December 9. Detective-Sergeant F. Sinclair said that the accused women had been shop-lifting for 15 years and further inquiries were necessary. The accused were remanded till December 30, Martha Jane Thompson to stay at the Salvation Army Home. DECISION ANNOUNCED Stanley Campbell Sycamore (Mr K. Walton) was fined £3O and ordered to pay costs for unlawfully communicating with a ward of the State, a young woman staying at a State institution. The Magistrate, in giving his decision, ruled against the submissions of counsel made at the hearing on Thursday, and held that when communication had been established it was the onus of the defendant to prove that it was not unlawful.
