CURRENT NOTES

Mrs Lewis Griffiths (Peterborough street) will leave to-day to visit Mrs H. Vavasour, Ugbrooke, Marlborough. Mrs David Morgan, formerly Miss Alice Pascoe of Christchurch, who for several months has been living in Malta, has left for Haifa, Palestine, to join her husband. Captain Morgan, of the Ist Battalion, Green Howards, who has been stationed in Palestine for some time.

Miss M. Lorimer (Wellington), who is visiting Christchurch, will leave to-day for South Canterbury, and later will go to Eglinton Valley. Mr and Mrs A. D. Harman

(Fendalton) will spend the Christmas and New Year holidays at Wainui.

Mrs Jack Anderson (Dunedin) arrived in Christchurch yesterday and later will visit Mrs Wrey Nolan, Gisborne. Mr and Mrs A. R. Jordan and family (Rossall street, Merivale) will spend the Christmas and New Year holidays at Hanmer Springs.

Mr and Mrs W. J. Walker (Cashmere) will leave to-morrow to spend Christmas at Hanmer Springs. They will be accompanied by Mrs Walker’s sister, Mrs J. M. Murray, Devonport, Auckland, wlho will arrive from the north this morning.

Mrs Gerrit van Asch and family (Hoon Hay) will spend the holidays camping at Wainui.

Mr and Mrs W. H. Jones and their two sons (Valley road, Cashmere) left this week by the Maunganui for Melbourne. While there they will attend the wedding of Mrs Jones’s sister, Miss Billie Hankinson, who for 10 years was a pupil at Columba College, Dunedin. Mr and Mrs W. R. Adams (Otaki) with their daughter arrived in Christchurch yesterday and will be the guests of Mrs Adams’ mother, Mrs G. C. Smith (Mersey street, St. Albans), for the next three weeks. Misses F. M. and J. B. Spears will leave to-morrow to spend the holidays in Wellington. Miss Lucy Hogg (Wuodford House, Havelock North) is spending the holidays with her parents, Mr and Mrs E. G. Hogg, Cashmere Hills. Mrs T. J. Thurman (Wellington), who has been staying at the United Service Hotel, left yesterday for Dunedin.

Mrs A. P. Kaye Thomson left yesterday to connect with the Wanganella for a visit to Hobart.

Misses Molly Mustchin and Noreen Hodgsen (Barbadoes street) will leave Christchurch to-morrow to spend the Christmas and New Year holidays on a motoring trip to Invercargill. Mrs M. M. Allan, Mrs E. C. Frater and Miss Nancy. Boater (Rugby street) will leave on Swnday to spend a holiday at Hanmer Springs. , Mr and Mrs J. Miss C. Graham (Cambridge terrace) left last night to spend a holiday at Taupo with her sister, Mrs C. D. Edmundson, Napier. Mr and Mrs E. J. McNeill (Cashel street) and Miss R. Seguin will leave Christchurch by car this morning for a tour of South Westland and the glaciers. They expect to be absent from Christchurch until the end of January. A pleasant function took place at the Public Trust Office, when Mr A. R. Jordan, District Public Trustee, made a presentation on behalf of the staff to two popular members, Miss Ola McLeod and Mr A. W. Roberts, the well-known cricketer, who are to be married shortly. The matron of the Fresh Air Home, Cashmere Hills, gratefully acknowledges Christmas donations for the children in the home from the following:—Aulsebrook and Company, Mrs L, J. Taylor, Miss Jull, Mr P. H. Harris, Miss M. Blackmore, Miss Dailey, Miss Jewell, Mrs Hunsley, Mrs Worgan, W.C.T.U., Rattray and Son, Empty Stocking Fund. •

By the generosity of many friends the children at the Cholmondeley Memorial Children’s Home will have a happy time at Christmas. Every endeavour is made by the committee and the staff to make Christmas all that it should be for children. Recently a number of durable toys, such as a large washable doll which can be dressed and undressed, and strong carts, and dolls and toys of every description, books, and games have been given to the home. Christmas cakes and puddings, biscuits, sweets, and nuts will also appeal to the children. Every child in the home receives a Christmas gift, and, through the generosity of the Rotary Club, a shilling on Christmas Day. Christmas dinner is always an enjoyable function there and is followed by a party tea, and the occasion is a memorable one for the children.

Homage paid, to Agnes Domay, a French social worker who was killed during the bombardment of a Spanish town, is described by Miss I. M. Jamieson in a letter received from France, this week. Agnes Domay was a well-to-do woman who had accomplished much for her own people in France and who was visiting Spain to see what she could do to help the women and children there. At the meeting which Miss Jamieson attended, the photograph of the dead woman was draped with Spanish colours and placed in front of the platform and several notable Spanish people took part in the homage. Many flowers were placed beside the portrait, and money was presented for relief work in Spain. [ Several men took part. Victoria Kent, a noted Spanish lawyer now in the diplomatic service, was In the chair and a number of Spanish women spoke, Mathilde Haisce being the leader. * That afternoon, Miss Jamieson met “The Little Mother,” a ‘ Catholic writer of note in Spain. She describes her as a truly lovely woman with a beautiful speaking voice. She was told that “The Little Mother” was much loved, for she had done “wonderful work for the women and children of her own country.

Mrs W. F. Browne (Rossall street) is visiting Dunedin for the wedding of Miss Alma Browne and Mr James Dodgshun, which will take place tonight. Mr and Mrs Jack Tapley (Christchurch), Miss Patricia Luckie, and Mr Colin Tapley (who will arrive from Hollywood to-morrow) will be the guests during Christmas of Mr and Mrs Guy Tapley at Waikouaiti. Miss Margaret Ewing (Dunedin) and Miss Rae Murray will leave on January 3 to commence their nursing training at the Christchurch Hospital. Mr and Mrs H B. Lambert (Ashburton), who have been camping on Banks Peninsula for three weeks, have returned home.
