TO-DAY’S NEWS IN BRIEF OVERSEAS TRADE DELEGATION TO U.S. Reports from Washington state that Mr S. M. AIR RAID PRECAUTIONS The British Government is preparing to spend £20,000,000 in the provision of air raid shelters. These will be mostly a special type of steel shelter for use in homes where there is no basement. With other assistance to local bodies for erecting public shelters, it is estimated that nearly 20,000,000 people will be provided for. RECOVERY IN FRANCE Substantial gains in French stocks and Government bonds were reported by the Finance Minister (M. Paul Reynaud) in the Chamber of Deputies. He said the Government’s recovery plan had produced signs of renewed confidence and the position of the franc was so strong that support had recently been given to sterling, completely reversing the previous position. BRITISH AIRCRAFT PRODUCTION The Air Minister. (Sir Kingsley Wood) Stated that the monthly rate of aircraft production in Britain had more than doubled. in 1938, and was showing a marked upward trend. NEW ZEALAND THREE MEN KILLED Three public works employees were killed and a fourth, the driver, suffered a fractured arm when a lorry left the road and dropped several hundred feet over a cliff on the Opotiki-Gisbome highway last night. DAIRY PRODUCE MARKETING The annual report of the Primary Products Marketing Department shows that in the dairy produce account there was a deficit of £272,482 for the 1936-37 season. For the 1937-38 season the estimated surplus Is £555,185. The operations of the Internal Marketing division show a net profit .of £6804. HOMER SADDLE TUNNEL By the middle of March the leading tunnel which is being driven through the Homer Saddle will have been pierced for half the total distance. INCREASE IN NOTE ISSUE The Reserve Bank return for the week ended December 19 shows an increase in the note issue of £1,102,977, which brings the total to £16,298,740. STERLING EXCHANGE The return also shows a fall of £215,936 In the Reserve Bank’s sterling exchange holdings, compared with a rise of £371,173 last week.
