The Hon. W. Nash, Minister for Finance, left Wellington yesterday for a respite in the country. The date of his return to Wellington is indefinite.

Sir Walter Stringer was a passenger by the steamer express from the north yesterday.

Sir Charles Statham arrived in Christchurch from the north yesterday. Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., was a passenger on the steamer express from the north yesterday. Mr Frank Hutchens, the New Zealand pianist and composer, who teaches at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music, Sydney, is visiting his brother, Mr Will Hutchens, of Christchurch.

Mr C. P. Hainsworth, general manager of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition, arrived in Christchurch from the north yesterday. Mr H. A. Gilbert, managing editor of the “New Zealand Motor World,” was an arrival by the steamer express from the north yesterday.

Dr. L. C. L. Averill returned to Christchurch from the north yesterday.

Mr T. P. Fotheringham, inspector for the Union Bank of Australia in New Zealand, will relinquish the chairmanship of the Associated Banks of New Zealand on December 31, and will be succeeded by Mr R. C. Addison, resident inspector for the Bank of New South Wales. —Press Association.

Mr H. E. Moston, Assistant Secretary of Labour, will succeed Mr J. S. Hunter as Secretary of Labour. Mr Hunter was recently appointed to an administrative position in the new Social Security Department.—Press Association.

Mr J. S. Fleming, chief clerk of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture, or divisional clerk, as he is officially designated, will retire at the end of this month after 37 years’ service. Mr Fleming joined the department in 1901 ■as a temporary clerk at the Moumahaki Experimental Farrn, under the Fields Division. He was ‘transferred to the Dairy Division in 1903, when he took up duties as grader’s clerk in New Plymouth. In 1905 he was transferred to Wellington, and in 1909 was promoted to divisional clerk. On behalf of the staff, the director of the Dairy Division, Mr W, M. Singleton, made a presentation to Mr Fleming and wished him all happiness and prosperity.
