TERRITORIAL CAMPS
APPEALS FOR LEAVE TO EMPLOYERS
DATES ANNOUNCED
An appeal to employers to grant leave to their employees to attend territorial camps is made in a letter to the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce from Major-General J. E. Duigan, Chief of the General Staff.
“The dates have been carefully arranged to interfere as little as possible with business interests," writes MajorGeneral Duigan. “In some cases, however, the absence of a territorial member of the staff will mean some inconvenience for others working with him. But his training for home defence directly concerns everyone in the community, and in particular his attendance at the annual camp is the vital part of that training.“During the last six months the strength of the territorial force has increased to a net fighting strength of 3600. The new recruits have been of a very good type, who have been actuated by a strong sense of duty in offering their services. We are aiming at getting 80 per cent, of these young men into the annual camps this training year. Our success depends entirely on the sympathy and co-operation of the employers, and I feel sure that your members will do their best to help us.” The list of camps is as follows; — 9th Field Battery, trek from Christchurch to Sutton, January 28 to February 4; 12th Field Battery, February 4 to February 11; 10th Field Battery, February 11 to February 18; and 14th Medium Battery, February 18 to February 25, all at Sutton. 3rd Field Company, New Zealand Engineers, February 18 to February 25, at Flaxton; 3rd Field Ambulance.
