Because of the English climate an Indian prince has had to sell a house in Surrey on which he spent a fortune. The princess, his wife, would stop only one night. England was too cold for her, even in summer. The mansion is Snowdenham Hall, in Bramley, Surrey. It belongs to the Nawab Sahib Bahadur of Rampur, one of the five wealthiest ruling princes in India. The Prince spent hundreds of pounds on the household central heating system in the hope that his wife would feel comfortable in the lofty English rooms. He spent more than £6OOO on their seven state bathrooms, and altogether £30,000 on decorations. Now he wants to sell the house at less than half of what it has cost him. The Prince hopes to sell it as it stands, complete with furniture. The Prince’s shaving chair stands before a mirror in his dressing room. There are silk cushions and footstools in the Begum’s boudoir, which has a view for 10 miles. Upstairs in. the nursery suite there are English baby chairs and cots which three little Indian princes never used. The Prince himself has spent only 28 days of his four years’ tenancy in the mansion. He spent months in supervising plans for making Snowdenham one of the show houses of England.
