OFFICIAL FORECASTS

ITBB PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, December 22. The weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m. by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: —

Winds, light to fresh and rather variable, with south-westerlies predominating. A few isolated local showers probable, but weather for the most part fine, with rising temperatures. Seas moderate.

WEST COAST • The forecast for the West Coast of ;he South Island is;—

Light to moderate southerly winds. Weather fair to fine. Rising temperatures. Seas slight to moderate.

DOMINION The forecast for the Dominion is:—

Scattered local rains still probable, more especially from the Wellington Province southwards, with thunder and bail in places, but fair to fine practically generally to-morrow. Temperatures cool, but rising to-morrow. Pressure Is rising very slowly over New Zealand. An anti-cyclone is located over the western Tasman Sea, and is moving slowly eastward. A tropical cyclone is centred between Fiji and Tonga, and is moving south-east.

Winds —South-west to southerly, strong at first in some exposed positions over the North Island, but for the most part light to moderate. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Rather rough at first on the West Coast, but decreasing, and elsewhere slight to moderate.

Eastern Tasman Sea—Light to fresh south-west to southerly winds, and rather rough but moderating seas.

CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER

. Yesterday was cloudy in Christchurch with short periods of sunshine. There was a light south-westerly wind in the morning, veering to the north-east in the afternoon. Temperatures were cool, the maximum recorded being 61.2 degrees. At 1 o’clock this morning light rain w ms falling and there was no wind. The sky was overcast. The temperature was 47 degrees and the barometer was steady at 29.77 inches. Auckland—Yesterday was cloudy and fine, with a fresh wind from the south-west. The maximum temperature was 70 degrees. The barometer was fairly steady, the reading at 5 p.m. being 29.75 inches. Wellington—The weather was mainly fine, but threatening in the afternoon, with a few drops of rain at 2 o’clock, thunderstorms being visible in the distance. A light northerly breeze turned to southerly in the afternoon. The temperature was moderate. At 3.30 p.m. the temperature was 55.3 degrees and the barometer at 29.539 inches.

Dunedin —There was rain yesterday morning, but the weather improved later, and the sun shone in the late afternoon. The temperature reached a maximum of 65' degrees, and the barometer, after rising to 29.65 inches, was steady.
