RADIO PROGRAMMES FOR HOLIDAYS

A series of important talks has been arranged by the National Broadcasting Service, in which Mr H. G. Wells, the world-famous writer, will broadcast to the people of Australia and New Zealand on the following dates and at-the times (New Zealand) shown below:— December 29: 8.40 pun. “fiction About the Future.” January 8: 11.15 p m “The World As I See It.” January 19: 9.40 pjru. “Utopias.” January 22“ 11 p.m., “The World As I See It” iPart 2), “The Way to World Unity” These broadcasts are to be carried out through the national stations. IYA Auckland, 2YA Wellington, 3YA Christchurch, and 4YA, Dunedin. A special programme schedule bay also been arranged for the period, Saturday. December 24, to Tuesday. Jantiary 3 inclusive. Variety entertainment is provided for all listeners, and many special presentations are featured for the first time. Outstanding artists are to perform, including Clement Williams, Australian baritone, Paul Schramm. Viennese pianist, and Julie Werry, New Zealand soprano, A feature of 2Y.-VS concert session for Monday. December 26, will be a feature presentation introducing Rosario Bourdon and his concert orchestra, assisted by Vivian Della Chiesa. lyric soprano, and Thomas L, Thomas, baritone. These two vocalists are famous American operatic artists, Delia Chiesa coming from the Chicago Opera Company, and Thomas from the Metropolitan. Orchestral features include a children’s march, “Over the Hills and Far Away,” by Percy Grainger. Della Chiesa will sing “Toma a Sorrento” (de Curtis), and Thomas L. Thomas will be heard in that rollicking song “Cargoes,” by Dobson. Both will be* heard in duets. Overseas Artiste

New Zealand has few opportunities of seeing on the stage revues presented by notable casts of overseas artists, but from 2YA on Christmas Eve. and from. 4YA on New Year’s Eve listeners may hear a British Broadcasting Corporation production. ’’Who’s Hooper?" The book is by Fred Thompson, lyrics by Clifford Grey, and music by Howard Talbot and Ivor Novello. The lead will be played by the famous actor and comedian, W. H. Berry. Pantomimes are always popular with young and old alike, and 3YA on Christmas Eve and IYA on New Year’s Eve will broadcast “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.” Drama finds its place in the Christmas schedule, and the Dominion station 2YA on Christmas Night will broadcast a play written by the New Zealand writer GraemeHolder, the title being “Four Looked Down One Christmas Morn." Radio comedies are also scheduled during the festive period, and will include “Mra Grundy Comes, to Tea.” written by L. du Garde Peach, and “A Marriage has Been Disarranged.” On Sunday. January 1, IYA will present a radio adaptation of a novel. "Sam the Sudden.” written by P. G. Wodehouse. The play is entitled “Semi-Detached.”

Finally a feature in 4YA’s programme for the same evening will be
