CRICKET

HOSPITAL BOARD AND STAFF

FRIENDLY GAME PLAYED YESTERDAY

A friendly game of cricket was played on the green of the Christchurch Public Hospital yesterday, between members of the North Canterbury Hospital Board and the hospital staff. Although rain interrupted play shortly after 4 p.m., some good fun was had before then. The board went in for its first innings at 1.40 p.m., led off by the Mayoress, Mrs R. M. Macfarlane, and declared after it had put up a score of 218. The staff team went in after tea and made 43 for five wickets when the game was abandoned. The scores were:—

WOMEN'S GAMES

WELLINGTON TEAM TO PLAY CANTERBURY

NOTES AND COMMENTS

[By THIRD MAN]

Keen interest is apparently being taken in Wellington in the match against Canterbury for the Halliburton-Johnstone shield to be played at the Basin Reserve on December 30 and 31.

The Wellington team includes Mrs Danlells, who previously represented Otago

for several seasons, as well as many other well-known players. Its main strength is said to lie in its batting ability, although the side can boast some very good bowlers. The following notes on the team were taken from a recent issue of the "Evening Post":—

"The chief batting strength will be provided by Miss H. Buck and Mrs Daniells, who should make quite a formidable opening pair. Miss Buck is no stranger to Wellington teams, as she has represented the province since the inauguration of women's cricket here. One of the most polished batswomen in the Dominion, she plays forceful shots, yet with ease and grace. She is a prolific scorer, and will keep wickets.

"Mrs Daniells has been opening bat in Otago for the last five years, and has also kept wickets. She drives well, and in the trial game she and Miss Buck showed good understanding. She is a useful slow bowler, and her average is amongst the first five in the province. "Another outstanding batswoman who gave a good account of herself in Australia last year, but whose batting this season has not been up to its usual brilliance, is Miss D. Hatcher. Her fielding is excellent.

Miss L. Harris is a prolific run-getter, and anything overpitched is promptly dispatched to the fence. A neat leg glance is her favourite stroke.

"Miss M. Simpson has shown great improvement this season, and her batting and fielding are first class.

Bowling Strength "The bowling consists mainly of medium trundlers. Miss A. Ell flights her deliveries well and is especially dangerous when the shine is still on the ball. She is a good close-in field. "Miss I. Pickering, who has captained Wellington for the last four seasons, will again captain the side. She can bowl tirelessly and can hold her end up in the batting department. She is one of the best fields in the district. "Miss I. Holmes is the slow bowler of the eleven. She gained very valuable experience in Australia last season. She has not had a great deal of luck with the bat. however.

"Miss E. Page is the 'baby' of the team and is improving steadily in her play. She has a long reach which enables her to bring to light some useful on-drives. Her main fault at the moment in r.n inclination to impetuosity -with the bat. With the right conditions she can deliver a good medium-fast delivery. She is a dependable field.

"Miss J. Stenberg is a useful mediumpaced bowler with an excellent style of delivery, is a fair bat, and an excellent close-in field.

"Miss P. Pilcher, since her promotion from the junior ranks, has been bowling

■with considerable success. She is another young player who should gain valuable experience in the game with Canterbury. Not a pretty bat as yet, she deals determinedly with anything at all on the short side. Her fielding last week was keen. "An experienced player in Miss N. Sheridan is the twelfth selection. She is a steady bowler, a fair bat, and a good field, particularly in the square-leg position.

"Taking it all round, the side will take a lot of beating, and an interesting match should be witnessed at the Basin." It is understood, according to advice from England, that the New Zealand Council will be successful in having the tour of the English girls' team extended to include New Zealand. The English team will include such well-known stalwarts as Myrtle MacLaglan, Betty Snowball, Molly Hyde, and G. Morgan. Miss H. E. (Betty) Green, manageress of the last English team which toured the Dominion in 1935, will take up a position in New Zealand early next year. She has been appointed to the staff of the Chilton St. James School, Lower Hutt and will arrive by the Wanganella about the middle of February

Five' years ago' Mr Lamb, a wellknown motor dealer In Walthamstew, on the outskirts of London, retired from business to take up golf. He conquered golf, but last year decided that business was the most thrilling and satisfying of all games. The sequel was enacted recently when Captain J. P. Black, managing director of the Standard Motor Company, opened Mr Lamb's magnificent new showroom*, costing £25,000.
