Auckland Scratching^ Birthday Boy was withdrawn from the Auckland Cup and the Christmas Handicap at 1.10 p.m. yesterday.— Press Association.

Highly-bred Colt An interesting entry in the yearling sales at Trentham is that of the Phaleron Bay colt from the great race mare, Mandane. Mandane, who figures, as one of the top mares to have raced in New Zealand, won the New Zealand Oaks, Auckland Racing Club Summer Cup, Wanganui Cup, Manawatu Racing Club Tamatete Stakes, Wellington Racing Club Pacific Handicap and Hutt Handicap, and Canterbury Jockey Club Fendalton Handicap. She was also second, beaten by a nose, in the Auckland Racing Club Great Northern Derby, and second in the Wanganui Jockey Club Earle Stakes and the Canterbury Jockey Club Metropolitan and Fendalton Handicaps. She ran third in such important races as the Auckland Racing Club Great Northern Foal Stakes, Wanganui Jockey Club Guineas, New Zealand Derby, Auckland Racing Club King's I Plate and Mitchelson Cup, and Manawatu Racing Club Tamatete Stakes. This yearling, who is very highly spoken of, should have ability to win early and figure in the best classics. Horses on Tour

Riccarton and district-trained horses will be widely distributed during the holiday racing in New Zealand, and practically every stable will be represented away from home. A list of the horses and their destinations is as follows:

At Wingatuz—Recollection, Manetho, Sir Rosenor, Great Baby, Happy Memory, Lord Hawke, Montessa, Miss Otis, Prudent Prince, Ponty, Lady Leigh, Sovereign Lady, Cape Gabo, Cocksure, Second Innings, Night Dress, Great Bramble, Miss Bluff. At Waikouaiti Court, Aggravate, Miracle, Great Bramble, Rebel Queen, Bouillon, Dracula, Synthetic. Passenger, Skyrena, Chanteur, Haughty Toti, Ponty, Cocksure, Golden Chest, Miss Bluff, Great Baby, Wandarobe, Happy Memory, Tint o' Tan, Sovereign Lady, Ponty, Wine Card, Cocksure, Roy Bun, The Sandwichman, Night Dress. At Oamaru—Supreme Court, Dracula, Aggravate, Miracle, Chanteur, Chateaubriand, Great Baby, .Happy Memory. Haughty Toti, Montessa. Prudent Prince, Sovereign Lady, Ponty, Wine Card, Cocksure, Roy Bun, The Sandwichman, Lady Middleham, Great Bramble, Rebel Queen, Miss Bluff, Wandarobe, Tint o' Tan, Lady Leigh, Night. Dress, Golden Chest, Synthetic, Passenger, Skyrena. At Awapuni—Lady Rosette. Wild Chase, Argentic, Phalanx, Great Flight, Counterblast, Haughty Winner, Rabble. Night Hawk.

At Ellzrslie—Good Passage, Willie Win, Trench Fight, Dictate, Paper Slipper, Defaulter.

At Hokitika—Pol Roger, Tantivy, Ryetown, Terraby, Maka Ahi, Rebel Rank, Amoretto, Glenacre, Garonne, Palmyra, Rotokino, Skyrena, La Plata, Rebel Chief, Roy Bun, Kilrobe, Maroha, Bit o* Blue, Windward, Gay Parade, Alby, Silver Lark, Rebel Star, Glenogil. Metal Bird, Capital. Lowenberg After two unsuccessful attempts this 6eason to prepare him for another racing campaign, Lowenberg failed to survive a thorough preparation, and because of unsoundness has been returned to his owners, Messrs T. J. and P. A. O'Neill, of Wanganui. Lowenberg won the New Zealand Derby of 1935. Loss to Racing The death is reported from Invercargill of Mr M. O'Brien, a well-known personage in Southland sporting circles. He was a delegate to the Racing Conference for many years, and in addition to being president of the Otautau Racing Club, acted as a steward of the Southland, Clifden, Wairio, and Riverton Clubs.

First Appearance Mr W. McA. Duncan's yearling purchases at the National Sales are usually successful ventures, and it is therefore of interest to note that the Gascony— Aureate youngster for whom he paid 400 guineas last January is to have his first race at the Manawatu meeting under the name of Ruka. The Favoured Few

Occasionally a fractious horse gets the best of a start even when hurdled off from the rest of the field. Twice recently at Sydney a mare named Moaena has won by getting weil out from the pen. This undesirable state of affairs is due to a starter paying far too much attention to a fractious horse arid unfairly studying a small minority and not the majority in a field.

Still Unclaimed Further details have been received by Australian newspapers of the remarkable "electrical whip" which was found on a course in South Australia and concerning which a paragraph appeared last week. The whip is so

SOUTHLAND NOTES

STRONG TEAM FOR WINGATUI

IMPROVING HACKS

fTHE PRESS Special Service.]

INVERCARGILL, December 21. The Southland contingent engaged at the

summer meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club on Monday and Tuesday of next week is one of the strongest to represent the province in recent years. In the open «vents, as well as the hack races, Southland stables hold a strong hand and at this stage southerners appear certain to play a big part. Milford, Mona's Song, Ardchoille, and Ardmayle are engaged in the Otago Handicap on the opening day. Milford, who finished third in the New Zealand Cup has retained his form well and in a field of this class he is always capable of showing up. With 7-6 Milford was beaten in this race last year by Dictate by half a head. He has now 8-13—a rise of 211b. Milford can always be relied on to run a sound race, but at the difference in weights Mona's Song may have the best prospects of the Southland candidates. The latter has shown in private that she can hold her own with Milford at almost even weights, and on Monday he is to concede her 251b. Mona's Song has been improving all the time and, judging by the manner in which she has won over a mile she will experience little difficulty in seeing out 10 furlongs and a half. Ardchoille won in his last start when ne defeated Mona's Song in the Southland Cup; but he was rather lucky to do so. His chance in this field cannot be highly assessed, although he is in good order. Ardmayle is still eligible for hack company and on the minimum he does not appeal. He worked well over a mile and a quarter last week, but has failed to show up in his races this season. High-Class Sprinter

Rodeur is set down to contest both sprints, while Wild Career will start in the sprint the first day and over a mile the second. Rodeur will be entitled to be one of the favourites in the sprint events; she won in her last appearance at the Southland meeting with 9-0, and has trained on the right way since. There is no doubting her class. Wild Career may need a race to find him at his best. The Hurdlers

King Willow and Sir Admiral are engaged among the hurdlers. The best of the pair is likely to be King Willow, who has been schooling well during the last fortnight.. It will be his first start as a hurdler, but he has done a good amount of schooling and has plenty of ability on the flat. - Sir Admiral has been jumping exceptionally well at Riverton and is not without a chance.

Some outstanding southern hacks are engaged, these including Waitoru, Spanish Lad, and Astral Flash. A high opinion was held of Waitoru when he struck form late last season, and after being off colour, early this year, he is again right back to his best. His track work has been of a good standard and will assure him of support. Spanish Lad was unluckily beaten by Boswell in his last start and as he is a better horse now he is certain to be one of the most solidly backed of the Southland lot.

Astral Flash has come through a sound preparation and her prospects are as good as any in her class. The Colonel Cygnus mare put up a fine performance to run third to Boswell and Spanish Lad in her last start and she will be well suited when asked to race over a mile. In a big field her smallness is a handicap.

Foxlove's Form Foxlove is.engaged to race over a mile each day. Oh Cup week form he will have to be considered. He is not a good track, .worker, but on race day he has not yet run badly and the mile journey will suit him. Only two Southland two-year-olds. Blissful Lady and Mondello—have been paid up for. Both raced at the Cup meeting at Riccarton without showing up. Mondello has held her condition well and is a much more solid-looking mare now. She is better than her form to date makes her out to be. Blissful Lady has worked poorly in private but with the colours up she is a much better filly, although the opposition at Wingatui may be beyond her. Turaki, Doubleack, Jedburgh, Astral Light, and Kippen are engaged among the novices the first day. Astral Light, a sister to Astral Flash, is a filly cf great promise, and if she races up to her track form she will be a possibility. She, too, is on the small side, but has a brilliant turn of speed. Kippen has shown little worth-while form. Turaki was beaten by Half and Half in a high-weight race in his last start after making up what appeared to be a hopeless handicap. The Balboa gelding has improved and in whatever he starts he will have to be considered. Over 10 furlongs and a half on the second day he is well placed. Doubleack and Jedburgh may both be seen to better advantage . over some ground. During the last week or two Doubleack has been putting much more sting into his track work than previously and as he and Jedburgh have both shaped as though they will stay on, their best form may be over a mile or further. Guste will have to improve on anything he has shown yet to have any chance. Irish Fling's only engagement at the meeting is in the Novice Handicap, over six furlongs, the second day. The Woodend fifty has on\y started otvee to date, when she finished third at the Southland meeting in promising style and is a very likely improver. She is a half-sister to Wild Career.

cleverly constructed that without taking it to pieces it is impossible to suspect any device. It has been suggested that one of the riders must have misapplied the whip to his own person and that the contact was so severe that he threw it in the air. In any case, there have been no new developments and there is no eagerness on the part of the owner or owners to claim it from the police.

ACCEPTANCES

Acceptances for the Walau Racing Club's annual non-totalisator meeting on January 2 are as follows:

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Acceptances for the first day of the Canterbury Park meeting will close at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Acceptances for the first day of the Greymouth Trotting Club's midsummer meeting will close on Thursday, December 29, at 8 p.m. The first race at the Ashburton Trotting Club's meeting on Monday next will be started at 11.45 a.m. Special trains will leave Christchurch at 9.20, 9.35, and 9.50 a.m. Bracketed Misdeal and Falaise and Brown Tap and Braw Lass will be bracketed on the totalisator at the Ashburton Trotting Club's meeting on Monday. A Division Race In the JWakanui Handicap, which will be run in divisions at the Ashburton Trotting Club's meeting on Monday, the win and place system of betting will be in operation. In each division a win dividend will be paid as well as place dividends on the first and second horses. Ik Classic Races The Wrack—Erin's Fortune filly engaged in the Winton Juvenile Stakes will race under the name of Erinak, while the filly by Travis Axworthy from Glaora will be known as Wiaora. A high opinion is held of Waiora, who is trained by H. Butcher at Oamaru. Erin's Fortune, the dam of Erinak, was a useful race mare and was a half-sister to Nelson's Victory, Carver Doone, and other good winners. A field of 13 is likely to line up in the Winton classic. Unhoppled Trotters The fields for the square trotters' races at Gore and Winton are not strong, and. <lie credentials of Jock McGrath are as good as any. At the Invercargill meeting he finished a good second to Indian Scout, a double winner. Jock McGrath made an early mistake, but he showed a good turn of speed in .recovering this handicap and then made a race of it with Indian Scout. 'The Dunedin trotter has improved a good deal. A Promising Juvenile The race he had at the Wairio meeting appears to have improved Jack Bond, and the three-year-old looks exceptionally well at the present. He will not be produced again until he takes his place in the Winton Juvenile Stakes, a race in which he promises to be hard to beat. He is a well-man-nered youngster, and can be depended on to do everything right. A Cup Horse Walter Gay has been doing good work at Invercargill, and although he is well back in the handicaps he must be given a chance in the cup races. The Sungod gelding will lack nothing on the score of condition, as he was raced at Oamaru on Labour Day, and has done well in his work since. He is a first-class stayer, and has. only to receive a good run in the. Gore Cup to have a chance. Notes from Southland Ned Worthy has come into favour for the Winton Juvenile Stakes, and it would not be a surprise to find him the actual favourite on the day. The Worthy Bond colt showed a lot of pace in his race at Wairio, and recent track efforts point to him being much above average. He may not prove too reliable at the barrier, and this is considered to be his greatest handicap. W. Cosgrove has three useful novices for the holiday meetings in Aspirant, Viscosa, and Gentleman Jim. Aspirant is a good type of filly by Llewellyn, and is the first of that sire's stock to race in Southland. Llewellyn is represented by a number of promising young pacers. Viscosa finished third in his first start at the Southland meeting and has trained on the right way since. Gentleman Jim is a big Wrack gelding, yet to race. Tritoma's form at the i-ecent Forbury Park meeting was his best for some time, and in the sprint races at Gore and Winton he is likely to be in favour. The Frank Dewey gelding is racing solidly and, usuallv a smart beginner, he holds prospects of winning a race. The chances of Harold Guy in the Gore Cup are being given more than passing consideration, and as the Adioo Guy gelding is being brought from Christchurch he may be expected to show good form. When trained in Southland Harold Guy was regarded as a first-class stayer, but he Was not raced a great deal. Debenture* was well beaten by Roan Duke in her last start, but the latter's subsequent form' at Forbury Park enhanced the merit of Debenture's placing. Debenture, who is little morethan a pony, is a staY>\e-ma\e ot Gold Bank and Sydney Grand, and it is likely that she will start a short-priced favourite in the sprint race at Gore. She is possessed of a brilliant turn of speed and stands out in this field. Gold Bank, whose form this season is probably' better than any other en-

gaged in the Gore Cup, is regarded in some quarters as almost unbeatable, telegraphs the Southland correspondent of "The Press." The Worthy Bond gelding has yet to race over two miles; but he has created the impression, in the little racing he has done, that two miles will suit him better than any other journey. There is no reason to doubt his staying credentials, bu'. the results of the Gore Cup in recent seasons have seen many firm favourites fail. Salalon, Harold Guy, and Sydney Grand are all being discussed as being capable of making a race of it with the Gore pacer, but Bill B. is a horse who has appeared to escape notice. The American horse has not impressed as one likely to make a name for himself as a stayer, but the Gore Cup is unlikely to be a real test of stamina, and as has been 'the case on several occasions in the past it may resolve into a sprint home. If this is so it would not be surprising to find Bill B. outsprinting the majority of his rivals. Much may depend on the way the race is run and horsemanship at the finish.
