SOCIAL AND PERSONAL

Mr and Mrs H. E. Wylde are expected from the West Coast to-morrow to stay with Mrs W. B. Cunningham (Nile street) for Christmas. Miss Olive Barron (Wellington) is expected this week to stay with Miss Dorothy Barron (Grey road).

Mr and Mrs F. I. Washbourn and Miss Joan Washbourn (Grant's road) will leave this week to spend the holidays at Nelson. Mrs Malcolm Powrie (Christchurch), who was staying with Mrs F. C. May (Wai-iti road), has left to stay with Mrs Percy Wright (St. Martins). Mr and Mrs R. S. Baird and family (Park lane). Mr J. Mcßae, and Mrs D. Taylor (Selwyn street), left yesterday to visit Auckland. Miss Ada Inman (Cattle Valley) has returned from a visit to North Canterbury. Miss Maud Wilson (Bidwill street) will leave to-day on a visit to Wellington. Mrs H. Bannerman (Sarah street) will leave to-day to stay with Mrs S. G. Holmes (Mount Harding, Methven). Mr and Mrs H. Lister (Park lane) have returned from a visit to England. Mr and Mrs J. M. Ritchie (Dunedin) arrived yesterday to visit Mrs W. H. Orbell (The Levels). Mrs Douglas Barker (Kaikoura) will arrive this week to visit her parents, Dr. and Mrs W. E. Gibson (Elizabeth street).

Mrs Reading (Wellington) arrived yesterday to stay with Mrs Walter Raymond (Park lane) before leaving to visit her father, Sir John Sinclair (Dunedin).

COLUMBA OLD GIRLS» ASSOCIATION

1 Of the many associations of old girls of secondary schools, none is 1 more active in Christchurch than the Columba Old Girls' Association, a group, relatively small, but very enthusiastic. Twice a year the members hold social gatherings—generally a dinner party in the winter and a luncheon party before Christmas—and to these parties old girls come from distant parts of Canterbury, while those who live in the city attend in full force. Yesterday the association held its Christmas luncheon party at Ballantynes and, like its predecessors, it was a great success. The tables and the menu cards were decorated with scabious and daisies in the college colours—blue and gold. Mrs Lance Jewell, senior vice-presi-dent of the Christchurcli branch, who welcomed the guests, wore a frock of Marina wool, embroidered in white, a white fox fur, and wide-brimmed, high-crowned white straw hat, with vari-coloured swathe. She was presented by the committee with a spray of carnations. ' Guests of honour were Mesdames A. O. Wilkinson and W. S. Seed (representing Austral Girton College old girls). Misses M. Enright and Jean Clark (Nelson College Old Girls' Association), Mesdames C. H. Clemens and C. Cunningham (St. Margaret's College Old Girls' Association)), Mesdames M. B. Warren and A. R. Larcomb (St. Hilda's Old Girls' Association). After lunch, a big blue and gold bon-bon was opened, and from it each guest received a Christmas gift. To honour Miss Clorine Simms, whose marriage to Mr R. E. Chamberlain will take place shortly, Misses Minnie and Dorothy Jarman, who will be bridesmaids, acted as hostesses at a "variety" gift party held at their home in Riverview street, Fisherton. The time was spent in games and competitions.

WOMEN'S DIVISION OF FARMERS' UNION

HURUNUI PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE

An enjoyable afternoon was spent at Pahau Pastures, Culverden, where many members of the Hurunui Provincial Executive of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union met by invitation of the provincial president, Mrs Marmadukel Bethell. There were about 165 members present; who were welcomed by Mrs Bethell at an informal meeting held on the lawn. The speakers were Miss M. G. Havelaar (Christchurch) and Mrs Colin Mcintosh (West Eyreton). Miss Havelaar gave an interesting address ohthe work of the National Council of Women. Mrs Mcintosh, a well-known member of the North Canterbury Provincial Executive, spoke briefly upon the difficult times through which the division was passing, and wished everyone a happier and better New Year.

Mrs G. Hartnell (Culverden), thanked the speakers for their addresses, and Mrs G. H. Hugonin, president of the Kaikoura branch, thanked Mrs Bethell for her hospitality.

Afternoon tea was served on the lawn, and afterwards members enjoyed strolling through the beautiful garden.

RICCARTON BRANCH Members of the Riccarton branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers* Union enjoyed an entertaining programme at their Christmas party. Items were given by Mesdames Pearce and Collins, and Miss M. Kennedy described her life in Geneva. Mrs Ambridge thanked the contributors for their entertainment and conveyed Christmas greetings to members and visitors.

VIEW HILL BRANCH The monthly meeting of the View Hill branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the school with Mrs O. J. White pre siding. Arrangements for the Christmas tree for the children were completed. A demonstration on making and changing a bed for an invalid was given by Mrs Doak. Results of competitions were:—Best lettuce, Mrs Allen 1, Miss White 2, Mrs Monk 3; sultana scones, Mrs Allen 1, Mrs Mcintosh 2, Miss White 3; best rose, Mrs Doak 1, Mrs Allen 2, Miss White 3. Hostesses at the tea hour were Mrs Doak and Misses Ryde and White.

PRE-WEDDING PARTIES

MISS THELMA RICKARD HONOURED

Many wedding gift parties have been given in honour of Miss Thelma Rickard, who is to be married on Saturday to Mr Frank Weston, of Nelson. A blue gift evening party was given by Mesdames C. J. Goode and J. W. Palk at Mrs Palk's home, Papanui road, and a presentation of a crystal bowl was made by members of the East belt Methodist choir.

A handkerchief evening party was given by Mrs R. E. Ayrey and fellow members and associates of the drama groups at Miss Lucy Cowan's studio presented her with a diamente evening bag.
