FILIPINO SHIP COMING

Shipping history was made m the port of Auckland when, for the first time, a vessel arrived manned entirely by Filipinos. The ship, the Susana, arrived on Sunday night from Bunbury, Western Australia, with a cargo of hardwood, including 50,000 railway sleepers. She is Philippine registered, of 3742 tons, and is chartered by Millars' Timber and Trading Company (Overseas), Ltd. She was built at Monfalcone. in Austria, in 1914. The master of the vessel. Captain Miguel Lasa, is a Filipino, as are the other officers, and the whole crew of 52 men Captain Lasa said it was his first trip to New Zealand, which he had been told was "God's own country." He has followed the sea all his life and holds a Philippine tlC Captain Lasa added that he had travelled in eastern and western parts and had been with the Susana for three years. He spent one year and a half at New York. When he first took his ship there he was told by the authorities that he was the first Filipino captain ever to have taken a ship to New York. The mate is Idelfonso Jlores, and the chief engineer Jose Moredo.
