OFFICIAL FORECASTS

WELLINGTON, December 21. The weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m. by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows:

Winds rather variable with south-westerlies predominating and occasionally freshening. Weather changeable and with rain at times. Isolated thunder and hail still possible. Temperatures cool. Seas slight to moderate.

WEST COAST The forecast for the West Coast of the South Island is:—

Fresh west to south winds. Weather cool and changeable with showers at times and fair intervals. Seas moderate to rather rough.

DOMINION The forecast for the Dominion is:—

Weather changeable with occasional rain in most districts, but more especially in the South Island. Temperatures moderate to cool. Although yesterday's depression has passed off, pressure has remained low over the Dominion. An anti-cyclone is centred west of Tasmania, but is making little progress eastward.

Winds —West to south predominating, mostly light to moderate, but strong at times in most places, and rising to gale in some exposed positions. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Rather rough to rough on the West Coast north of East Cape, and at times in Cook Strait. Otherwise slight to modEastern Tasman Sea—Moderate to strong south-westerly winds. Rather rough to rough seas.

CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER

Yesterday was overcast and showery in Christchurch, with a slight to moderate north-easterly wind. Temperatures were cold, the maximum recorded being 59.90.

At 1 o'clock this morning the sky was cloudy and there was no wind. The temperature was 50 degrees and the" barometer was almost steady at 29.59 inches.

Auckland—The day was fine, with a cloudy sky and a moderate to fresh westerly wind. The maximum, temperature was 72 degrees. The barometer rose slightly, the reading at 5 pjn. being 29.75 inches. Wellington—Yesterday was fair, with a north-westerly wind which freshened about noon. Temperatures although cool in the morning rose rapidly in the afternoon, the maximum being 63.9 degrees. At 3.30 p.m. the temperature was 62.9 degrees, and the barometer was at 29.469 inches. Dunedin —The weather yesterday was dull, with frequent showers. There was no wind, and the maximum temperature was 55 degrees, while the "barometer was steady at 29.55 inches.
