ADDINGTON MARKET

KEEN FAT LAMB SALE

HEAVY SHEEP ENTRY

The feature of yesterday's fat stock market at Addington was the big entry and quality in the fat lamb section. The sale of these was an excellent one, and generally at more than export rates. Butchers bought a good proportion of the penning. Fat sheep were penned in heavy numbers, but the sale was a good one with prices better than those ruling last week in the earlier part, but easing to last week's level in the later stages. Fat cattle were penned in smaller numbers, but there was little change in values except for the prime medium-weight steers, of which there was a good showing, these selling at from 10s to 15s a head better than a week ago. Porkers recovered somewhat in price, but the store "sections of the .market were lightly filled and not a great deal of interest was taken in these sections.

STORE SHEEP Little of note was offered in the small store sheep yarding apart from a consignment of Chatham Island wethers, from H. A. Hunt (Pitt Island). These sold at equivalent values to last week. These were four, six, and eight-tooths, well set up and forward sheep. The tops made to 19s Id, with others at 17s 7d, and the culls at 14s lOd. A two-truck line of fourtooth wethers from Kaikoura made 14s and 15s sd. The remainder of the yarding comprised rough lots of ewes and lambs and gummy ewes, with the exception of a pen of two-tooth ewes which made 16s, and a nice pen of wether hoggets 14s lOd. Sales were:— Wethers—Sixty-four Chathams at 14s lOd, 128 at 17s 7d, 128 at 19s Id; 75 Kaikoura at 15s sd, 72 at 14s. Hoggets—Eighty-two at 14s lOd, 66 at 12s Id, 88 at 12s Id. Ewes and Lambs—Seventy at 4s lOd, 73 at 5s 3d, 84 at 9s 4d. Ewes—Nineteen at 16s, 22 at 4s, 61 at ss.

| FAT LAMBS The entry In the fat lamb section was exceptionally large in view of the Christmas demand, the entry totalling approximately 3000 head, compared with 1100 last week'. The quality was particularly good, many outstanding lambs Deing included. Though the export schedule has been unaltered, company operators frequently paid more than the standard rates, and butchers paid up to BJd for most of the best lambs they secured, and a full lid for the heavier weights. The sale was particularly spirited, vendors receiving up to 2s a head more for their lambs than they expected. Top price was 31s lOd for a pen of five outstanding ipmbs sold by J. H. Watson (Kaituna).

FAT SHEEP The entry comprised about 6500 head, and included a fine showing of prime sheep. The entry came from all parts of the province, and a big proportion by motor-lorry. At the start of the sale the demand was keen, most of the wethers •being above export parity. In the earlier part of the market both wethers and ewes were dearer than last week by Is 6d a head. Later values eased and exporters bought freely at up to 19s for wethers.

In the final stages of the market values came back to a parity with those of last week, but the demand was surprisingly well maintained until the finish considering the exceptionally heavy entry. Passings were comparatively few. Values were as under: — Extra prime heavy wethers to 26s lOd. Prime heavy wethers. 22s to 24s 6d. Prime medium-weight wethers, 18s 9d Ordinary wethers, 17s 6d to 18s 6d. Light wethers to 17s 3d. Extra prime heavy ewes to 22s 10d. Prime heavy ewes, 18s 6d to 20s 6d. FAT CATTLE For a double market the entry was a small one, comprising 470 head, considerably fewer than, the normal pennings at recent sales. Quality was of a good grade, there being a fine showing of prime medium-weight steers and a few pens of good heifers. Cows, although forming a fair proportion of the yarding, were generally of a better class than usual. There were very few entries from outside the province, most of the good lines coming from the Peninsula and local fattening districts. The market opened firmly at about 10s a head better for the best classes of beef, this improvement being more than maintained for medium-weights as tne sale progressed. Big plain steers were scarcely so firm, and except for the best cows, which maintained last week's rates, there was a shade of easing also for cows. Some of the best of the beef made from 36s to 39s per 1001b, and medium quality 33s to 355. Values were as under :-»- Extra prime heavy steers, to £l7 7s 6d. Prime heavy steers, £ls to £l6 10s. VEALERS

There was a medium entry o£ 180 head, which, for a double market, was small penning. Due to a large entry of fat lambs and a fair proportion of the beef entry being young and light cattle, vealers, except for best quality, met with a verv poor sale. Best quality sold on a par" with the rates ruling last week, but for small vealers and medium calves, of which the entry was largely comprised, were back by 4s to 5s a head, and this decline increased towards the end of the sale. Butchers apparently did not want this class, and were only prepared to buy at extremely low prices.

Values were:— J Best runners, to £8 13s 6d. Good runners, £3 8s 6d to £5 16a. Prime vealers, £3 16s to £5 6s. Medium vealers. 31s to 41s. Large calves, 18s to 295, Small calves 9s to 16s.

STORE CATTLE

The entry was the smallest for a number of sales. It comprised mixed lots, no straight lines of young cattle being forward. The absence of these caused little interest to be taken in the sale.

DAIRY CATTLE

Though the entry was not a large one, it was considerably bigger than that of a week ago. For the most part the penning comprised a better class, fewer rough sorts being forward. There was a bright sale throughout, values being up for all decent class cows and heifers by 30s a head. Good sorts of cows and heifers made from £9 10s to £lO 10s.

FAT PIGS

The entry at the commencement of the porker sale was very small for a double market, consequently prices showed an advance of 3s to 4s a head over the first half of the auction, but owing to late arrivals there was an easing over the later part of the sale. Nevertheless, the market was a very satisfactory one compared with recent auctions. About 40 baconers were sent forward, and these sold at prices on a parity of the last sale.

Values were:— Light porkers, 38s 6d to 44s 6d. Medium porkers, 45s 6d to 49s 6d. Heavy porkers, 51s 6d to 54s 6d. Extra heavy porkers, 55s 6d to 59s 6d, Average price per lb, 63d to 72d.

STORE PIGS

The store pig entry was exceptionally small, very few good quality weaners being included. Butchers in search Of sucking pigs were unable to fill their requirements except at very high prices. Large and small stores showed an advance of from 3s to 4s a head. Values were:— * Small weaners, 15s to 19s, best, 22s to 265. Slips, 22s to 255. Medium stores. 26s to 295. Large stores, 30s to 345.

STORTFORD LODGE

(VXBM MBOOU.TIOM TILMBAX.) HASTINGS. December 21. At the last stock sale of the year at Stortford Lodge, values showed little change from last week's. A yarding of 240 fat and 1200 store cattle met a fairly representative bench of buyers. Quality was inclined to be only medium. Good prime cows ranged from £9 to £9 17s 6d, medium sorts from £7 10s to £8 12s 6d, and poor to light from £5 13s to £7 ss. Heifers were yarded in best quality, and reached .from £lO 19s down to £lO for extra prime with light to medium ranging from £8 2s 6d to £9 19s. Ox beef was hardly quotable, the best of the dozen head yarded making £l2 10s. Vealers and runners were also in short supply, the best reaching to £4 17s 6d. Store cattle were firm on last week's rates with small-grown two-year-olds selling best. Two-year steers made from £6 15s to £7 2s 6d, and heifers of the same age to £5 4s. Yearling steers made from £4 7s to £5 14s, and heifers'to £3 14s. Cows fit for fattening sold strongly to realise up to £5 13s, with poorer sorts down to £3 Is. Tops in bullocks made to £lO 10s, with chilling lines to £8 17s 6d.

Fat sheep met a firm and keen market with prices for prime ewes showing a slight advance on last week's rates. Prime ewes ranged from 15s 3d to 15s Cd, light to medium from 14s to 15s, woolly ewes ixom 15s ad to JM, Cross two-tooth ewes

realised to 19s 4d, hoggets from 18s 6d to 19s Id, and wethers from 17s to 17s 6d. Lambs were yarded in fair numbers, and the tops made from 23s 3d to 25s Id, medium to prime from 20s 4d to 22s 9d, and light from 18s to 20s.

BURNSIDE

Otbiib issociatiov ruisxah.) DUNEDIN, December 21. Values were firm at the Burnside stock sale to-day, which was the Christmas double market. A total of 308 head of fat cattle was forward, good cows and heifers being in short supply and commanding a firm sale. Extra prime heavy bullocks made to £22 17s 6d, prime £l6 7s 6d to £lB 12s 6d, medium £l2 17s 6d to £l4 12s 6d, light down to £9 2s 6d; extra prime cows and heifers to £l3 17s 6d, prime £lO 12s 6d to £ll 7s 6d, medium £7 12s 6d to £9 2s 6d, light down to £4 7s 6d.

Some four-year steers in the store pens made to £ll 2s.

The entry of fat sheep was 1641, and at the start there was a general firming, though poorer quality was easier. Later, extra prime heavy wethers made to 29s 6d, prime 25s to 27s 6d, medium 21s 9d to 23s 6d, light from 18s; extra prime ewes to 245, prime 19s to 21s, medium 14s Bd to 17s 3d, light down to 9s. The large total of 2997 fat lambs was forward, and while butchers found prices higher than recently, export buyers operated at full schedule throughout. Extra prime heavy lambs made to 27s 6d, prime 24s to 25s 9d, medium 21s to 22s 3d, light down "to 16s 9d.

Pigs had a keen sale, prices generally being iully. J.os a iiead ua on istfs -Jti&ft '
