LATE SPORTING

TEENTHAM NOTES

TEAMS FOR HOLIDAY RACING

ITHE PRESS Special Service.! WELLINGTON, December 20. Continued broken weather has greatly hampered training at Trentham for some weeks. This morning a thunderstorm and deluge on already greasy tracks made conditions more like mid-winter than mid-summer. The first few horses out after dawn galloped in light rain and on a greasy track, but within an hour extremely heavy rain settled any further chance of serious training. The largest team from Trentham will be that of T. R. George, who will have a dozen or so racing at Manawatu, two at Ellerslie, and one at Waipukurau. H. A. Telford will have six at Awapuni on Saturday, Beaulivre is in great fettle again, and there is no sign of any shin soreness. He -worked the reverse way, and ran half a mile in 52sec. Beaulivre leaves for Ellerslie on Thursday, and P. Atkins will ride him.-

It has been decided that Peerless will run in the Manawatu Cup on Saturday, and then will be sent on to Auckland on Monday. She will be a starter in the Great Northern Derby. The suggested Australian trip is off, and she will race through the autumn in New Zealand. No rider has been announced for her in the Great Northern Derby. In the Manawatu Cup she will be ridden by L. J. Ellis. Floral Robe will not be going to Hawke's Bay, but will be at Manawatu. The only member of T. R. George's team to go to Hawke's Bay will be Lady Baron, who is in at Waifiukurau on Boxing Day, and she will hen be taken on to the Hawke's Bay meeting. Royal Star II worked well in finishing in front of Debham after five furlongs run in lmin ssec, the last half taking 52sec.

Accomplice and Sigurd ran together for six furlongs; but the pace was not on. Both are forward. Accomplice has never been in more solid condition, and she should be an early winner.

Sunee and Good Sun ran half a mile in 53 2-ssec, and the former was doing the better at the finish.

Freight hauled through the Otira tunnel last week from west to east totalled 14,266 tons, compared with 15,985 tons in' the corresponding month last year and 12,757 tons in 1936.

ELLERSLIE NOTES

AUCKLAND, December 20. With the approach of the Auckland summer meeting, there was a lot of interesting work at Ellerslie this morning on the course proper, on which the poles were 45 feet out. The weather was fine, and the course was in excellent order. Good Passage strode over six furlongs in lmin 23 3-ssec. She was going well within herself at the end. Over a similar distance, Trench Fight took lmin 24 4-ssec, being under restraint throughout. The Railway Handicap candidate Paper Slipper hit out freely while running five furlongs in lmin 7 3-ssec. the first two in 25 2-ssec. He is in fine trim.

Gay Son, after running his first three furlongs in 40 4-ssec, was going comfortably at the conclusion of seven furlongs in lmin 35 l-ssec. This three-year-old is in great order after his recent racing. Mazir and Padishah were companions over a mile and a quarter, which they ran in 2min 15 l-ssec, the final round in 2min 5 l-ssec. They traversed the last seven furlongs in lmin 32 2-ssec, and the final half-mile in 54 3-ssec. Mazir had a slight advantage at the finish, but Padishah was going particularly well over the last stage of the gallop.

Kelly did a mile in lmin 45 2-ssec, the last seven furlongs in lmin 31 4-ssec, and the final half-mile in 53 2-ssec. He was going nicely at the end, and also pulled up well. Defaulter was going comfortably beside Dictate over six furlongs in lmin 20sec, the last three furlongs in 39 4-ssec.

The best seven furlongs of the morning was credited to Stretto, which ran right away from Philcourt and completed the distance in lmin 30 4-ssec. Stretto ran her first half-mile in 49 4-ssec, and the last six furlongs in lmin lßsec. It was a first-class effort.

Willie Win occupied lmin 37sec for seven furlongs, after taking 40 2-ssec for the first three. He was doing his work comfortably at the end. Marie's Acre and La Vie reeled off half a mile in 50 4-ssec, the last three furlongs taking 38 4-ssec. There was little between them at the finish, though Marie's Acre was going the easier of the pair. The best five furlongs was credited to the Great Northern Foal Stakes candidates, Konneta and High Caste. They ran the first two in 23 4-ssec, Konneta being about four lengths in front, but High Caste was almost on terms with her at the finish, the full distance taking lmin 3 l-ssec. It was a good effort.

After running his first three furlongs in 38 3-ssec, Courtcraft was going well within himself in a useful gallop. • Lutanist, after taking 13sec for the first furlong, was not bustled to run half a mile in 54sec. Over a similar distance Tooley Street registered 50 4-ssec, after running his first furlong in 12 l-ssec.
