The Hon. D. G. Sullivan (Minister for Railways) and Mrs Sullivan, accompanied by Messrs G. H. Mackley (General Manager of the Railway Department), E. T. L. Spidy (superintendent of railway workshops), and G. G. Stewart (manager of the publicity branch of the Railway Department), will arrive' at Greymouth this evening by rail-car. They will attend the opening of the new gold dredge at Kanieri on Friday morning, and will return that evening to Christchurch. The Minister for Internal Affairs (the Hon. W-.“E. Parry) left for Wellington by the steamer express last night. The Minister was accompanied by Mrs Parry and Mr A. G. Harper.

Professor F. W. G. White was last evening elected president of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand in succession to Dr. F. W. Hilgendorf. Mr R. A. Falla Dr. Hilgendorf were elected vice-presidents. Mr L. A. Davis, formerly manager of Lintas, Ltd., Wellington, has been appointed managing director of Lintas Pty., Ltd., of Australia. Dr. C. E. Hercus, Dean of the Medical Faculty in the University of Otago, was a passenger on the steamer express from the north yesterday. Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., was an arrival by the steamer express from the north yesterday. Professor H. E. Field arrived in Christchurch yesterday from the north.

Lieutenant-Commander G. E. Oldham, of the Naval Office, Melbourne, was a passenger on the steamer express from the north yesterday. Congratulations to Mr L. W. McCaskill on having been granted a Carnegie travelling scholarship were given at the annual meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand. t

A motion of sympathy with the family of the late Mr Frederick Hobbs, Town Clerk of Lyttelton, was passed at the meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. Mr R. T. McMillan said that Mr Hobbs was held in high esteem by all who knew him. The board appreciated the good work done for the community, -■ both publicly and privately, by Mr Hobbs. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr Hobbs was passed at a meeting last night of the executive of the Canterbury Progress League.

Mr T. M. Charters, president of the Canterbury Progress League, was appointed by the executive of the league last night to represent it on the advisory committee of the South Islands Travel Association.
