ADDINGTON MARKET

SMALL YARDINGS HIGH FAT CATTLE PRICES Small entries in most of the major sections of stock at yesterday’s weekly market were reflected in a sharp advance in val “ es ; This was particularly the case with fat cattle and quite the best sale for some years was the result. Values adyanced by approximately 4s to 5s per 1001 b. and most of the best beef offered exceeded the 45s mark per 1001 b. Wethers . w ere not wanted. In ine subsidiary sections of stock there was a sref5 re f sale, particularly for store cattle and store pigs. STORE SHEEP The penning in the store sheep section comprised about 2500 head. Competition was keener and sales in most classes were made at slightly higher figures. A truck lot of four, six, and eight-tooth well-bred Corrledale ewes, with Corriedale lambs ax foot, realised 17s, and other lines of aged ewes with good lambs sold at from los to 12s 6d. Hoggets were also more keenly competed for, selling at from 10s to 13s 8d for reasonable sorts, with a small specially good pen at 16s. A pen of a fairly large line of well-woolled two-tooth ewes made up to 25s 3d, but other entries of ewes and lambs were not attractive. No wethers were offered and a line of shorn wether hoggets failed to attract any competition. Sales were:— Hoggets—7o at lls, 78 at lls 2d. 77 at 13s, 62 at 13s Id. 78 at 13s 6d, 76 at 13s Bd, 85 at 10s 6d, 10 at 16s. SPRING LAMBS The entry in the spring lamb section was considerably reduced, and the result was an Improvement of -*'■■. ;:t a head. Best lambs sold at from 14d to 14Jd per lb. Some well-grown and prime-conditioned lambs were included in the entry. Top price was 41s lOd for a single lamb from S. D. T. Boyce (Amberley), top price for a single lamb last week bel-g 38s Id, for one sold by J. E. Miller (Killinchy). A line of 15 lambs from • H. M. Burgin made from 31s lOd to 39s lOd. an average of 355. T. Boyce (Amberley), 1 at 41s lOd. FAT SHEEP The fat sheep entry comprised about 4500 head, about 500 less than at recent sales. Quality was better than usual, and this, combined with a smaller penning, inade the sale, brisk from the outset. In the earlier stages wethers were better by from 2s to 2s 6d a head and ewes by up to Is, but light wethers of store condition showed no improvement. There was little change from these prices until the concluding portion of the sale, when ewes firmed further, and were Is 6d a head better than at the commencement. Altogether the sale was a freer one and with the limited supply offering, following a scarcity of beef in the cattle pens, the sale was one of the best for some weeks. There was a fair sprinkling of shorn sheep in the penning.* Top price for wethers was 36s lOd. for. pens from A. Grant (Fairlie) and A. Bennett (Riverside), and ewes from A. F. FAT CATTLE The entry in the fat cattle section was one of the smallest for a long time, comprising 300 head, and following on a penning not a great deal larger a week ago butchers were faced with a distinct shortage of supplies. As a result prices soared to levels which have not been exceeded for several years. The average improvement, on top of a pronounced advance last week, was about 35s a head, but there were cases of light beef where the advance was not far short of 40s. In the scramble for supplies many butchers were unsupplled at the conclusion of the sale. The tail-end section of cows and heifers was very much smaller, and this helped to raise the general quality of the entry. Up to about 60 head came from the West Coast, several trucks from South Canterbury, and a reduced proportion from the Peninsula. Good beef sold at from 45s to 47s per 1001 b, tops to 50s. heavy-weight from 40s to 445. A truck lot of eight steers from H. Banks (Coutts Island) sold at an average of £2l, top price for a single beast being £24 17s 6d. Best beef made from 43s 6d to 47s per 1001 b, tops to 50s. good 40s to 435, and secondary down to 355.

Small calves predominated, and these for the most part were of good average quality, whilst the larger sorts, which were fewer in number, formed a nondescript collection. The sale, nevertheless, was an excellent one, all classes remaining fully on a par with last week, until over the las( race values advanced by 2s to 3s a head, Choppers were forward in fairly good supply and another excellent sale resulted.
