RACING AND TROTTING

SYSTEMS OF BETTING

DIFFERENCES OP OPINION

Mr H. Archbold, Dunedin, writes as follows ,to the editor of “The. Press” under date August 31:— '‘As a constant reader of ‘The Press,’ I noticed in the trotting column of yesterday’s issue that you have reported what Mr Samson had to say about the betting system at Forbury Park and its decrease in attendances, “Mr Samson overlooked to say that ini the previous year the Coronation meeting drew a huge attendance. As there are more clubs using the 75-25 per cent, systems than win and place in New Zealand, I think in fairness you should publish the details given by. the supporters of the single-pool system which I enclose.”

The following is an extract'from the "Otago Daily Times” .of the report;of the annual meeting of the. Forbury Park Trotting Club:— ' “Mr H. .Archbold took it upon himself to answer the question (as to the success or failure of the 75-25 per cent, system of betting), and he strongly defended the single-pool system, quoting figures in support of his advocacy. In proportion to the attendance, he said, the investments were up on the previous year’s figures. The gate receipts during.the last year were £3694, or 83 per cent, of those for 1937. The totalisator handled £149,792 in 1937, and 83 per cent, of this was £124,327. During the year just closed the totalisator handled £ 136,647, which represented an increase of £12,327 on the basis of attendance. Moreover, the receipts fpr The year showed a decrease of £2639. When this was added to-the increased stakes (£600) and the net profit (£988), the total was £4227," compared with a profit of £3135 in 1937, In his opinion the system of betting had not affected the position at all. . Other clubs with the same system, had also shown decreases in investments compared with the previous. year, which was an exceptional one because of the amount of back pay that was received and spent. “Mr J. Samson contended that the decrease in profits was caused solely by the betting system. All the investments were down, and this went to show that the public wanted place betting—without this the club could not get the returns. The 75-25 per cent, system had been proved a failure, and he was sure numbers of people did not attend the club’s meeting solely because there was no place betting. He expressed the hope that members would.realise the position and go back tq the win and place system. It was possible that the conference would , allow the chib to return to the 15-25 per cent, and place system, but he was firmly, convinced: that the single pool was a failure. Forbury was the only club in New Zealand that did not increase tlie stakes for. its winter meeting. The reason was that it had the 75-25 per cent system, and the committee was- frightened to increase the stakes in case it lost money ‘on the meeting,”

NOTES ON THE RACING

[THE PRESS Special Service.]

NEW PLYMOUTH, September 1, Always in Lead

Annoyer scored a decisive victory in the Trial Steeplechase. He was always in the lead except for a spell in the middle stages when Lady . Callaghan ran past him. but he soon took charge again and was never likely to be caught. Nino Martini was just as decisively second. He was well up early, but drifted back, putting in a strong finish to beat all the others. Cynical Smile, Lady Callaghan, and Sir Acre were all handy to the leader for a long way, but they, tired badly at the end. Gay Maid fell at the third fence, where Right Royal was stopped by the mishap and Daniel Boone also fell. The winner gave a good exhibition of jumping and also handled'the going much better than his opponents

A -Narrow Margin

Backers who had solidly supported Lord Cavandish in the first division of the Weraroa Stakes received a great fright, for he only just got up. It was, however, a performance of great merit. Kokako began brilliantly and led to the straight from Ngakaru, Corato, Rolling Home, and Taitoa, with Lord Cavendish further back and not at all well placed. Kokako ran right off tha course turning into the straight, leaving Corato in charge from Rolling Home with Lord Cavendish still a fair way back. Corato looked a certain winner until the final strides when Lord Cavendish, vigorously handled, just got up to win going away. Rolling Home only just beat Windsor Chief, who came from well back, and Kokako and Taitoa were next. ■ Lord Cavendish would probably have won easily on a roomy 0 course, and his triumph over difficulties stamps him as likely to be a useful horse. Kokako, who is by Hunting Song, handled the going well but ran very greenly. It was his first race and a promising effort. Corato, one of E. J. Murtagh’s team; had every chance. Though he is green and should improve Windsor Chief should be more at home over a longer journey.

Not in Danger St, Cedric was well backed to win the second division of the Maiden, and beginning well he ran to the trout and was never in danger of defeat. Eurotas was handy to him all the way, but was floundering badly in the going and had no chance with the winner, though he was well clear for second, Narrator just getting up on the post to beat Car Leaf for third. Eurotas was so easily beaten that he lost some of his reputation, but it will be a 'different story on top of the ground. v, Gold Ballad Wins

Superior ' horsemanship, .was largely responsible for the win of Gold Ballad in the Whenuakura Hack Handicap. He was always one of the leaders though he drew well out, and his attendants were Shangri La, Race Boy, High Sea, and Vivacious, while on the turn both Sly Fox and Autosweep began to improve their positions. Gold Ballad’s nearest, opponents all ran out wide into line leaving him clear, but he had to

be ridden right out to win very narrowly from High Sea with Autosweep close up, and also well up were Shangri La, Iddo, and Sly Fox. The favourite, Susan, was near the leading bunch early, but got squeezed back and was never dangerous. High Sea, a son of Heroic, looks a useful horse and he would have won in another Stride. Sly Fox went a fair race and should improve. Glenvane’s Hunt Cup

The strength of the Hunt Cup Steeplechase field was further reduced by the course scratchings of Power Chief and Lady Callaghan. Hirangi started favourite and appeared to lose a good chance of winning when he fell two fences from home, as he had joined the leader, Glenvane, and was going well. This left Glenvane a certain winner provided he jumped the last fence, and he scored well from his stablemate. Red Mint, who ran over the tiring Sabatini and Booklaw. Glenvane gave a good exhibition and was always going well. He was a useful horse on the flat. Flower Bag drifted very early and was pulled up, and Star View refused to take any part in the race. The first and second horses are both trained by H. Dulieu. The Open Sprint

Amigo looked well enough to carry his favouritism with credit in the Waihau Handicap, but was never a possibility. Pakanui- began well and made all the running, closely attended by Prince Acre, . Light Comedy, Clessamor, First Chapter, and Amigo. Jazz Boy made a-forward move on the turn, where Light Comedy had joined Pakanui, and this pair led into the straight from Prince Acre and Clessamor. Pakanui held on till the closing stages, when he was narrowly defeated by both Clessamor and Prince Acre, with Light Comedy a good fourth. Then came Jazz Boy, Mungakaha, and Amigo. Clessamor won well at the finish, though he did. not have much to spare. Amigo had an excuse in the bad ground, but a disappointing feature was that he never showed any dash at all. Prince Acre, Pakanui, and Light Comedy all ran sound races.

Gentlemen Riders Red Rufus went to the front six furlongs from home in the Ladies’ Bracelet, and although taken on by. Salon and Te Huia, he won well. Te Huia, however, was off the course round all the turns and should have been more difficult; Salon on the other hand had every chance. Tres Sec was never dangerous under his weight in the going.

Concluding Event Alyth scored a very easy win in the Waverley Hack Handicap. She was always well placed, and following Hunter’s Eve to the straight, she drew right away in the ,run home. Le Toquet finished well to head off Proclamation for second with Dark Eagle fourth, then Hunter’s Eve, Milanion, and Sing Lee. Nothing had any chance with the winner, but Dark Eagle’s fourth was a fine effort as he was away back by himself a bad last in the first half. The favourite. Amoroso, was never dangerous. There was money for Milanion, but after running up prominently in behind the winner on the turn, he did not run on.

The programme for the North Canterbury Racing Club’s annual race meeting on October 24 provides for six galloping and two trotting events. The principal event, tW? Rangiora Handicap, for hacks, will be run over a mile and a quarter, and carries a stake of £l7O. and the Open Handicap, of £l4O, will be decided over seven furlongs and a half. Other races are the Highweight Hack Handicap, of £llO, one mile; the Trial Plate, of £IOO, for nonwinners, five furlongs; the Oxford Hack Handicap, of £124, six furlongs; and the Fernside Hack Handicap, of £l2O, seven furlongs and a half. Nominations for all events will close on October 12. Success for Haerepo

A cable message was received last week by P. V. Mason to the effect that Haerepo had his first win at Brisbane last Saturday. Haerepo. who is by Nightmarch from Azalea, and was bred by Mason, was sold by him to his present Queensland owner for a good sum. He made his Australian debut some weeks back, but was galloped on, and had to be eased up until he reappeared last week. Mason has a two-year-old brother to Haerepo in work at Riccarton.

In Abeyance Wild Talk arid Keen Sight were galloped half a mile together at Riccarton yesterday, the former finishing the

better. Unfortunately she showed a recurrence of lameness, which had previously, affected her, and there is now a doubt about the pair going to Wanganui next week as intended. A definite decision will be made after they have another gallop to-morrow. Out of Hacks

Lady Leigh has been kept going steadily since the Grand ' National meeting, and is to be given a race at Ashburton, where she will have to tackle open company. Studley Royal, in the same stable, is at present being hacked about by J. Olive. He failed to find a buyer when offered for sale last month, and do doubt his owner, Mr C. Holdsworth, will later put him into work again. In Veteran Stage

Silver Ring was down to make his reappearance in Australia at Newcastle yesterday, and is engaged in the Newcastle Cup to-morrow. He was allotted 9-3 in both races. Silver Ring, who won the Epsom Handicap at Randwick in 1934 with 9-6, is now nine years of age. New Stud Book

Volume XIII of the ‘New Zealand Stud Book has been published, and is now being distributed. The task of keeping these records up to date is an arduous one, and the present volume contains nearly 150 pages more than the previous book. It has been well done, and is a tribute to its compiler, Mr H. R. Sellers, secretary to the Racing Conference. Substantial Win Stretto started at very satisfactory odds when she won the Warwick Stakes on Saturday. Only one paper tipped her to win. A few gave her a place chance, and one actually selected Royal Chief as the winner. Stretto’s connexions had a substantial win.

TROTTING NOTES

A Reminder The monthly meeting of the Board of the New Zealand' Trotting Association will be held, to-day at 7.30 p.m.

A Fast Half-mile America and New Zealand are not the only places where fast times are registered and if Is interesting to note that in Queensland recently a pacer, Teddy Derby, paced half a, mile in Imin 0 2-ssec. The following report is taken from the Australian Trotting “Record” of August 24;—“ Teddy Derby; a pacer that races without the hopples, on Wednesday last at the Brisbane Show did an exhibition half-mile in Imin 4isec. On Saturday night he succeeded in his attempt to reduce this, and again from a standing start, paced by a galloper, he .succeeded in putting up the fast time of Imin 0 2-ssec. The first quarter took 29 2-ssec, and the second 31sec. The only boots worn were quarter and shin boots in front. When Teddy Derby did 2min 10 2-ssec in the attempt to lower Machine Brick’s 2min 12se.c, he proved his speed and set Lawn Derby a bigger task than anticipated. Teddy Derby, foaled in 1930 is a bay stallion by David Belmont from Miss Brisbane, a mare by Mambrino Derby from a dam by Toledo from Kitty, by Vancleve (imp.), from a Childe Harold mare. As Globe Derby (sire of David- Belmont) was also by Mambrino Derby, blood of the latter is represented on both sides of Teddy Derby’s pedigree. Mr H. G. Gooding, the lessee-owner of Teddy Derby, was in the sulky during the stallion’s exhibitions. When Teddy Derby won in Melbourne four years ago he was in .the colours of Mr D, Knox, then owner of David Belmont. Mr T. Payne, of Southport. Queensland, figures as the breeder of Teddy Derby.” Lawn Derby

At the Brisbane Show last month Lawn Derby thrilled the crowd by his mile in 2min 9isec. which reduced all

previous records in that State.' The unhoppled stallion was driven by Peter O’Shea, his father, the well-known W. J., still being out of action owing to his recent accident. In his first attempt Lawn Derby broke after doing a lap but was given another chance and ran away from his pacemaker. As Teddy Derby, also unhoppled, had just done 2min 10 3-ssec, it made Lawn Derby’s task more difficult than anticipated.

New Zealand Derby After the second payment for the New Zealand Derby, 18 well-bred three-year-olds still stand their ground and the 1938 classic may prove a better race than was generally expected. The winners of the two-year-old classics, Shadow Son and Bedrock, were not engaged and unless form proves all wrong the Derby cannot provide a true test of three-year-old supremacy. Shadow Son and Bedrock proved fine pacers in the company they were set to meet and if each has developed in the meantime. the Ifcue would lie between them. Possibly Bedrock is the better pacer of the two, but it is to be remembered that he was fully extended to beat Aldershot in the Sapling Stakes. The latter may have improved a good deal since that race, and a line on his form

may be taken after his effort at New Brighton to-morrow. Next in order may be Special Edition, whose slow beginnings may have cost him more than one race. There are others, however, that have shown form and these include Coquette, a filly by Grattan Loyal • from Bonny Logan, trained by F, G. Holmes, Zingarrie from M.-B. Edwards’s stable, Centaurus. trained by R- _B. Berry and the Roydon Lodge pair, Virginia Girl and Rosalind. There is wonderful breeding for speed in the 1938 New Zealand Derby field.
