APPROVAL FROM LABOUR
Statement by Sir John Simon
POSITIVE PEACE POLICY URGED
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION COPYRIGHT.) (Received September 1, 7.10 p.tn v ) LONDON, September 1. Making the first pronouncement from the Labour Party on the crisis Mr C. R. Attlee, in an article in the “Daily Herald,” approves of Sir John Simon’s speech as a warning that there is a limit to the tolerance hitherto given to the Fascist Powers. He urges that the speech should be followed up by a positive peace policy, rallying the democratic peace-loving foi’ces throughout the world.
He adds that there is ’abundant evidence that the peoples of Italy, Germany, and Japan resent the huge Sacrifices demanded of them. “I am convinced that if it is made plain that aggression does not pay the peaceful elements of the Fascist countries will make their influence felt, provided that simultaneously the way is opened to international co-operation by a strengthened League of Nations and the removing of causes of friction, especially economic ones.”
