The appointment of Sir William Hunt as the representative of stock and station agents on the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board has been gazetted.—Press Association. Dr. E. Bulton, Dr. R. B. Martin, Dr. P. Chisholm, and Dr. E. H. M. Luke arrived in Christchurch by the steamer express from the north yesterday morning. Mr R. B. Tennent, Director of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture, visited Christchurch yesterday for the annual meeting of the Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs.

Mr W. W. Mulholland, Dominion president of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, was a passenger from the North Island by yesterday morning’s steamer express. Mr E. T. Tirikatene (M.P. for Southern Maori) arrived from the south by rail lastevening.

Mr S. Freeman (secretary of the New Zealand Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs) went north by the steamer express last evening.

The Hon. J. K. Archer, M.L.C., and the Hon. W. Hayward, M.L.C., returned to Christchurch yesterday morning from Wellington. Mr Malcolm Cholerton, of Christchurch, who is in England, has passed the F.8.0.A, honours examination, and has been appointed to a senior position at the London Refraction Hospital, where he expects to remain until his return to New Zealand next May.

A scheme for visits by young farmers to the homes of members of Young Farmers’ Clubs in other districts, instead of the present district tours, was approved at the annual meeting of the Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs in Christchurch yesterday. A delegate said that the more ambitious tours did not give members sufficient time in the various places visited. It was suggested that organised visits between districts should be encouraged, the young men to spend about a fortnight on farms and help with the work. As the visits could be arranged more easily and could be returned more readily, the scheme received the approval of the federation.

Major work to be done before Westport is linked with the main railway system of the South Island includes the construction of 12 large bridges, 170 culverts, and two short tunnels. This was indicated by the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) in the annual report of his department tabled in the House of Representatives yesterday. The gap between the railheads is 18£ miles. The average number of men employed during the year was 330, this being the maximum number that could usefully be engaged, as the bulk of the earthwork is completed.—Parliamentary Reporter.

An old residence in Lichfield street, associated with a well-known Christchurch family, has been sold recently and will be demolished. The house, a two-storeyed building of 12 rooms, was built about 49 years ago by Mrs Wauchop a year or two after the death of her husband, who was a Southbridge businessman. A family of 11, including Mr H. H. Wauchop (Christchurch) and Mr F. Wauchop, a well-known dancer, of Wellington, was brought up in the 1 juse. It has been purchased by Mr A. D. Park and it is intended to build a modern garage on the site. The purchase price was about £2400.

A gift of trees, shrubs, and plants worth several hundred pounds has been made by jMrs B. P. Lethbridge, of Turakina, to the Wanganui City Council. They have been transferred to Virginia Lake reserve from the grounds of Mrs Lethbridge’s home, formerly a landmark in the Turakina district, which was recently destroyed by fire.— Pres* Association.
