COMMUNITY SING AND CONCERT

KAIAPOI SCHOOL BATHS FUND TO BENEFIT

The satisfactory sum of £7 was realised by a concert and community sing organised by the Standard V girls of the Kaiapoi School, in aid of the school swimming baths fund. The concert was held in the Methodist Schoolroom on Wednesday evening. The programme included items by Standard V girls, assisted by Miss D. Stark, Betty Cowan, Tom Cross, Geoffrey Price, Athol Cattermole, and Mr A. Hirst, and the community sing was conducted by Messrs A. O. Eyles and G. Addie.Mr Eyles also acting as accompanist. Mr S. Raymond, in thanking the performers for the Kaiapoi School Committee, - made a presentation to Mr Eyles of a fountain-pen from the girls who organised the effort.

LABOUR PARTY

ADDRESS TO SUPPORTERS AT LITTLE RIVER

Mr T. H. Langford addressed members and supporters of the Labour Party in the Town Hall, Little River, recently. He was given a hearty vote of thanks on the motion of Mr I. Barclay, seconded by Mr A. Adams. Mr S. S. Barclay was in the chair. At the conclusion of Mr Langford’s speech, a branch of the Labour Party was formed. The following officers were elected:—General committee, Messrs J. Keenan. J. Harty, C. Dutton, A. Thompson, T. Mould; social committee, Mr and Mrs H. Wheeler, Mr and Mrs W. Mould, Mrs Cameron, Messrs T. Robinson, C. Barclay. J, Berwick, and L. Radford.

WOMEN’S TEMPERANCE UNION

MEETING OF KAIAPOI BRANCH

The president (Mrs A Stocking) presided at the monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. The meeting took the form of a bring and buy afternoon. An address on Florence Nightingale was given by Mrs W. H. A. Vickery.

MEETING AT RANGIORA

A discussion on the liquor problem and poll was led by the Rev. H. Ryan, at a meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union at Rangiora recently. Mrs H. Ryan presided. Arrangements were made for a speaker on temperance to visit the Bible classes, and it was decided to hold a women’s meeting in October, when an address will be given by a speaker from Christchurch. A report on the executive meeting in Christchurch was given by Mrs C. R. Thwaites.

LODGE MEETING AT SHEFFIELD

The quarterly meeting of the Loyal Malvern Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Sheffield, recently. The Noble Grand (Bro, G. Innes) presided. Two candidates were initiated. Bro. J. McLay, P.G., .and Bro. L. Jones, P.G., were conductors dor the initiation ceremony.

E. H. SIME WINS HORORATA CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

In the stroke handicap played in conjunction with the first round of the Pearson cleek on the Terrace Station course by the Hororata Golf Club, the best cards were;—J. Ballagh 71, A. D. Oliver 74. E. H. Sime 76, W. Stone 78. W. O. Gray 80. In the semi-final of the senior championship E. H. Sime beat T. H. A. Richards and W. Stone beat K. Murray. In the final Sime beat Stone. In the semi-final of the junior championship R. G. Keith beat C. Petre and. A. Charles beat J. Ballagh.

MATCHES AT DARFIELD

MALVERN AND CHRISTCHURCH TEAMS TO PLAY

Teams from the Malvern Women’s Hookey Sub-Association will play against Christchurch senior B teams at Darfleld to-morrow. The draw is;—Lyttelton v. Greendale, Hornby v. Darfleld, Digbys v. Hororata, Southbrook v. Kirwee. Aranul v. Sheffield. Sheffield will play before lunch. All Malvern players are requested to be at the Darfleld Memorial Hall at 11 a.m.

W. OAKLEY WINS AGGREGATE AT HALDON

There was a good attendance at the weekly shoot of the Haldon Miniature Rifle Club. H. Ballagh’s second trophy was won by D. Yaxley, and the hotty button by W. Oakley. The grand aggregate for the year was won by W. Oakley, the runner-up being F. Gough. In the handicap aggregate for the Grlgg Cup, W. Oakley was the winner, with H. The handicap trophy and button were won by F. S. Barrett, the runner-up being L, Hughes. The three-night handicap trophy was won by W. K. Oliver.
