DOWNHILL EVENTS

CANTERBURY WINTER SPORTS CLUB

The Canterbury Winter Sports Club’s downhill ski championships were decided at Mount Cheeseman during the weekend in mild, overcast weather. The warmer temperature of the night before and light rain had left, the snow in a heavy condition. The results were as follows: Men’s Downhill Championship—E. W. Rich, lihln 25sec (100 points) 1; H. Lerchanthal, 2min 15sec (63.0 points) 2; L. B. Black, 2min 35sec (54.8 points) 3: D. C. POwrie, 3mln lOsec (44.7 points) 4. Eight started. The usual course was chosen, from just under the lower peak and finishing on the flat below the hut, some 50 yards shorter than usual, giving a descent of about 1000 feet. Rich completed the course with one fall with a strong, well-judged, and well-controlled run. Lerchanthal, running the first schuss too steeply, lost time by getting below the control. G. L. Nlcoll, after a fast run to Just above the finish, lost a ski and retired. Women’s Downhill Championship—Mrs T. H. Latham, 3min 55sec (100 points) 1; Miss M. Black and Miss J. Willis, dead heat. 4min ssec (95.9 points) 2; Miss J. Seymour. 4min lOsec (94 points) 4. Four started. , The women’s course was restricted to about 800 feet by omitting the top schuss. Mrs Latham’s steadiness over all conditions gave her a narrow- margin, to win by 4.1 points. Miss Willis’s run showed extreme steadiness on the steep schuss above the finish, and Miss Black’s was noticeable for its quick recoveries from falls.
