CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING

CHAMPIONSHIPS OF

CANTERBURY

A. H. WAYMAN’S SUCCESS

CHRISTCHURCH RETAINS

TEAMS TITLE

A. H. Way man won the crOss-country championship of Canterbury at Cashmere on Saturday. He was clearly superior to the rest of the field, going into the lead with half the distance covered and carrying on in convincing style to win with ease. His time, 38mln 34sec, was fair for the heavy 64-mile course. D. H. Pannell, the consistent Christchurch athlete, finished in second place about 120 yards behind Wayman. Pannell again led the Christchurch team to a clear-cut victory In the teams’ race, defeating South Canterbury by 25 points to 38. Presbyterian was third and Methodist fourth. Few of the teams were at their full strength because of Illness and Injuries, and the standard of the competition suffered accordingly. Notable absentees Included the holder of the title. H F?; m H TgiS"KS'X. ». e. (South Canterbury) went into the lead, with Wayman (Methodist). L. E. Fox (Christchurch), and Dr~H. Adamson (University) following him. Adamson took the lead with two miles covered, but with half the course done Wayman went out and led for the remainder of the Journey. Pannell, who lost a shoe fairly e ®™y, put in a fine run over the concluding stages and took second place from Adamson! Taylor, who was tiring more than the others, was fourth, with Fox fifth and F. Mair (Baptist) In sixth place. Easy Victory

South Canterbury took a prominent part early in the race, but fell back over the later stages and left Christchurch With an easy victory.
