Captain Barnes was educated at Osborne and Dartmouth, and throughout the Great War he saw service in aestroyers, in 1914 in China, 1915-16 at Gallipoli, 1917-18 the Dover Patrol and Belgian coast. After the war he was m H.M.S. Renown, when the Prince of Wales visited India and Japan in 1921-22. For two years, from 1923, he was on the training staff at Chatham Barracks, and then for four years (1926-30) he commanded the destroyers Seraph, Vivacious, and Wisharfc He was promoted to the rank of commander, and he receivea appointment as training commander at Chatham Barracks. After qualifying at the R.N. Staff College in 1923. he became executive officer of H.M.S. Iron Duke in 1924. From 1935 to 1937 he commanded the Echo and the 10th Destroyer Division. The latter appoint-

ment included service at Alexandria during the crisis of 1935-36, and service in North Spain in 1937. Since receiving promotion to the rank of captain in 1937, he has undergone a senior officer's war course at Greenwich.

Commander A. B. Fanshawe, R.N., who has been lent to the New Zealand Government for three years, went to sea as midshipman in 1911. In the early part of the Great War, he served in a destroyer, with the Grand Fleet at Scapa Flow, and he was present at the Battle of Jutland. Later he went to the Belgian coast. Since the war, Commander Fanshawe has been at many naval stations. For five years he was in gunboats in China, the Mediterranean, America, and the West Indies. His last duty was as commander of the Erebus, a cadet training ship jtorspecial entry cadets. '"■''''

An address on recent legislation in New Zealand was given by Mr J. Thorn, MP., at Willesden. where an election campaign is in progress, before he left for New Zealand. He made a vigorous attack on the criticisms of New Zealand's financial position. Wito Mrs Thorn, he will reach Auckland on the Rangitane on August 25.
