WEST COAST NEWS

SOUTH WESTLAND ROADS

CONSTRUCTION WORK

REVIEWED

REPORT TO AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION

Road work in South Westland was mentioned in the report presented at the annual meeting of the Westland branch of the Automobile Association, Canterbury. "The extension of the Main South road to Haast and thence to Makarora and towards Milford Sound has been steadily pushed onward," said the report. "The Fox and Cook rivers have been spanned by attractive suspension bridges and Bullock and Saltwater creeks have been bridged with the usual concrete type, and similar ones are being constructed over Havelock and Black creeks. For the Karangarua river a longer suspension bridge than either of those already completed will be erected, and there is also a fairly extensive deviation in the route from Karangarua bridge site to Manakaiaua, but this is being pushed rapidly ahead and should be completed well ahead of the bridge. "It is expected that a contract will soon be let for the Manakaiaua and two other smaller bridges nearby, and the Jacobs river bridge is nearing completion. "Jackson's Bay is now being opened up, and the erection of a wharf will very materially assist road construction by enabling materials for bridges and other road works to be brought by sea instead of by the very long road route.

"Reading has not yet started up the Haast river to meet the work done on the Central Otago side, but the Makarora end (Otago side) road construction is now over the pass itself and actually proceeding on the Westland side, and surveys have been made for some distance down the Haast.

"A large number of men are employed by the public Works Department on new South Westland roads and many of the hazards connected with this work are being overcome by the department,"
