AUSTRALIA PLAYS THE ARMY
-—-♦ PICNtC MATCH BEGUN AT ALDERSHOT HOME SIDE DISMISSED FOR 113 RUNS (Received August 18, 11 a.m.) LONDON, August 17. The Australian cricketers to-day began a two-day match against the Army team at Aldershot, in warm, genial picnic conditions. The teams were:— Australia—S. J. McCabe, W. A. Brown, J. H. Fingleton, A. L. Hassett, S. Barnes, C. L. Badcock, B. A. Barnett, C. W. Walker, W. J: O’Reilly, E. L. McCormick, L. O’B. Fleetwood-Smith. The Army—Captains R. Melsome, L. Grove, R. Hudson, C. Hamilton, R. Osborne-Smith, C. Packe, J. W. A. Stephenson, Lieutenants' B. Hayles, T. Knapp, M. Harbottle, and the Rev. J. Steele. Batting first, Army made 113. Australia, at stumps, had put on 211 for five. McCormick, bowling at mere muscle-loosening pace, bowled Harbottle in his second over. An unusual jncident in a quiet morning’s play occurred when Fingleton, from the. longfield, hit both wickets with the one throw. When Hamilton, who had shown a pleasing range of strokes, and Hudson, regarded as one of the Army’s best batsmen, were dismissed, the side quickly collapsed, eight wickets falling in an hour for 35 runs. Gaining valuable practice, -Fingleton and Brown scored 65 in 45 minutes before Brown was dismissed. In a brief, spectacular display, McCabe provided the best batting of the day. Then Fingleton and Barnes scored steadily at the expense of the Army’s uniformly medium-paced bowlers. Badcock also displayed good form. Scores:—
