October 29—Thames T.C NATIONAL VICTORS 1 - ONE IN MELBOURNE CUP . ... . (By CARBINE.) It is reported from Awapuni that the Grand National Steeplechase winner, Clarion' Call,~is to be given a good spell. ’ Clarion Call did not have! an easy time, having to contest the National double, but his trainer had conditioned him splendidly for the task, and he came through the ordeal well. The Winter Cup winner. Catalogued too, is on the easy list. He is suffering from a foot injury, but. should be recovered from that shortly.. . Catalogue was entered for some . of the leading events in Australia this: spring, but no indication .has been 'given yet that he will be taken to Australia to race, although such a trip might fit in nicely with certain events which are pending. One of-the races Catalogue is entered for is the Melbourne Cup, in which his weight is 8-4. . > GUINEAS HORSE ■ 1 1 , AMIGO TO HAVE PUBLIC " TRIAL ■ , (By CARBINE.) ' One of the most interesting entrants for the Combined Hunt Clubs’ meeting at New Plymouth at the beginning of next month is Amigo, who is to contest the Wanganui Guineas a week later. The race in the open six at New Plymouth should be a valuable outing for Amigo, who is understood to be doing excellent work at Wanganui in preparation for the spring campaign. Amigo was one of the best, of last season’s two-year-olds, and he left the impression that he would be a good three-year-old. • PREPARING FOR SPRING LAUGHING LASS ANI> « ORATORY (By CARBINE.) Laughing Lass is galloping very pleasingly at Awapuni, and apparently will be ready early in the spring. Most of her tasks have been over short courses, and in these she has shown great speed. Although she is not top class she is very useful, and was among the sprint winners at TVentham last ‘ season. ■ „ ■ Another of L. G. Morris’s team who is coming on nicely is Oratory. She has shown by her track work that she retains her brilliance. While she is very fast, she does not apneal as a stayer, and probably a mile is her best distance.

TURF GOSSIP To Correspondent A.J.N.—A horse cannot be penalised in a hurdle rr.ee for winning a steeplechase. Riccarton There were no serious trials on the flat at Riccarton yesterday, and the schooling of a couple of young jumpers was the main interest. Dividend went well when sent twice over the two pony hurdles, clearing the obstacles without any hesitation It was his first experience, and, he made a good impression. Patuma. with some previous experience, showed plenty of dash over the pony hurdles, and later jumped one of the big hurdles like a veteran. He is to have a more extended school later in the week, and he may be an early aspirant for hurdle honours. For Melbourne Mr O. F. Watson has made arrangements for racing the three-year-old, Raeburn, and the five-year-old, Bonvellum, in Victoria in the spring. D. O’Connor will leave for Melbourne with the two horses on September 1. They ace both very forward, having raced last week, and they are being kept going in strong work, the pair getting through strong tasks yesterday. A Veteran Silver Ring was shipped to Wellington on Wednesday night on his way to Australia, where his owner. Mrs E. Fraser, resides. The Silverado geldings now nine years old, was a performer of the best class earlier in his career, but 'he . has done nothing of note for a long time, and he was not prominent in his engagements at Riccarton last week. May be Jumped A. McMullan now has Windward, an leight-year-old gelding by Gainscourt, under his care. He will be raced on the flat at Ashburton, after which he will be given a trial as a hurdler. Resumed F! A. Roberts has Lofty back in his stable. Ha put on condition during a spell in Hawke’s Bay, where he was sent after going lame last spring. Shorter Journeys Although Silver Sight fa'iled to stay in the long-distance hurdle races at the Grand National meeting, he is to be kept going for a further trial, in4he hope that he will pay his way over shorter hurdle journeys. At Washdyke / After last week’s meeting, where he competed in • hack races without success, Mr C. O. T. Rutherford handed Gleucos over to F. Trilford, who already had Round Score in his Washdyke stable, for the same owner. A Hunter Although Manawatu did not show form good enough to -Warrant a trip to the Grand National meeting, he may be on hand at Ellerslie to-mor-row. He has been qualified as a hunter, and he should be a possibility in the-Pakuranga Hunt Cup. • Juveniles ’ 1 - / a parade of two-year-olds will be held at the PakurangaHunt meeting, to be held at Ellerslie to-morrow. Eighteen entries have been received, representing’ 11 different sires. Doubtful' Unless the going is favourable at Ellerslie to-morrow. Shy will not be a starter in the" Jellicoe Handicap at the 1 Pakuranga Hunt meeting. The Valkyrian gelding has not done a great deal "of strenuous work, but he is very forward, so he may show an early return to form when the tracks become firmer, j Otago Hunt An excellent list of nominations has been received for the Otago Hunt meeting, to be held at Wingatui oh Saturday of next week. Tomcat, with an engagement in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase, will be the sole representative of Riccarton, but some wellknown horses will face at the meeting. Others in the Hunt Cup include Gold Wren, El Caballo, and Uncle Jim, who showed form over the Riccarton country, while among the hurdlers are Fireguard* Delrain, McHeath, Tautau Maid, and Corban, who were in the money at the Grand National meeting. The flat races have all drawn strong fields. Good Hack El Meynell has been hitting out in dashing v style in his track work at Ellerslie; which mainly has consisted of strong pacing, with a short sprint to the finish. He may always be seen at his best when the going is on the easy side, and he will have an opportunity of losing his hack status at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, where he is engaged in the Auckland Handicap, one mile. Koatanui Stud The first foaling of the season, at Mr G. M. Currie’s Koatanui Stud is a bay filly by Posterity from the LimondPennon mare Impetuous, a sister to Canopy and Damaris, and a half-sister to Lysander, Ceremony, Arisus, and Motley (dam of Moquette, Variant, Legatee, Midinette, and A 1 Jolson). Four of the orogeny of Impetuous have already achieved some distinction. Elanage has been a good winner in Australia and Tohunga was sold to go to Australia, while Imposture won for Mr Currie. The colt by Ringmaster from Imnetuous, purchased at Trentham in January for 850gns by Mr E. Hay. is now in the care of T. H. Gillett at Riccarton. where he is showing promise of being a useful two-year-old. Jockey 111 C. G- Goulsbro -will not be riding at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, to be held to-morrow: He did not feel well after riding Tidewaiter at Riccarton on Saturday, and he gave up the ride on Grey Honour in the last race. Since his return home pneumonia has develoned. P. Atkins will take his rides at Ellerslie. Thepo include Knight of Australia and El Meynell. -Veteran Trainer After being in ill-health for sorrfe time.'-- the veteran ' Auckland trainer, Mr Koss Heaton, died on Monday at

TROTTING NOTES New Brighton Trotting Club The New Brighton Trotting Club will throw the course open for fast work on August 27. As most horses are trained on dirt tracks and will have to race on grass at New Brighton, the club’s concession is appreciated. Bred in the Purple The transfer of the horse Gaillard from Canterbury to Auckland is a distinct loss to t breeding in Canterbury, if he is to be retired to the stud. Gaillard is a splendid specimen of the standard-bred pacer, and what is more, he is bred on true pacing lines and inherits the blood of a great sire in Logan Pointer. Too few of the Logan Pointer horses were left entire, and while Gaillard is by a pacing sire in Rey de Oro, who is by Copa de Oro from a good producing mare in Subito, his dam is the great little mare Bonny Logan, by Logan Pointer from Bonilene by The Bondsman from Madeline Marshall by Demonio. This is breeding that counts for a 1 lot, and Gaillard is the type to do particularly well at the stud. If only for the retention of Logan Pointer blood, he should be a popular sire. Southland’s Claims For second-class pacers Auckland appears to provide a good market for Canterbury owners, while in turn Southland .provides the horses, that having worked out of moderate class, still find opportunity for improvement in Canterbury. The pity of it is that extra permits are not available for Southland clubs, and this is a view shared by the majority of northern sportsmen. Many really good pacers have come from the south, but 't would be all for the benefit of the sport if they were afforded sufficient inducement to be trained and raced in the district in which they were bred. In recent months a good number of Canterbury horses have been sent to Auckland, the latest being Lone Derby, who has displayed more ’ speed than stamina, but may still win races. A mile in saddle is not above Lone Derby, and he may be a problem if a race of this type is included in a programme. At present he is under the care of A. W. Broughton. A Bright Future Since he registered a fine winning performance at the Forbury Park winter meeting when he bettered 3min 14sec for a mile and a half in a loose class, Donor has been regarded as one of the most promising pacers in commission, and recent performances bear this out. The Jack Potts gelding gives the impression that he will later stay on over two miles, as he has hung on very gamely in tight finishes. His dam, Lady Bountiful, was by Logan Pointer from Dollar Princess, by Rothschild from The Manageress, by The Manager from Miss Tracey, a daughter of a noted producer in Jeannie Tracey. Besides Lady Bountiful, Dollar Princess has left Doraldina (the dam of Daphne de Oro), Houdini, Accumulator, Donard, Spanish Gold (the dam of Hoyle), Dollar King, and a good winner in Recess. This material line embraces some of the best pacers raced in recent years, and Donor is not likely to fall short of the deeds of some of his well-performed relations. .

,the age of 82. Born. in. the Wanganui district, he went to Auckland about 1883 and later became associated with the late Mr James Kean, of Kohimarama, a successful trainer and owner of that period. Mr Heaton rode with a good deal of success in his younger days, both on the flat and over fences, and one of his most notable victories was on Despised in the Great Northern Steeplechase in 1893. As a'trainer Mr Heaton was also successful, and among his good winners were Golden Rose, winner of the Easter Handicap, in 1903, Avalanche and Broadwood. He retired from training several years ago. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. Avondale Jockey Club The Avondale. Jockey Club has received permission from the executive committee of the Racing Conference to change the dates of its spring meeting from October 15 and 17 to November 12 and 14. November 12 is the last day of the New Zealand Cup meeting. For Sydney Silver Ring will be shipped from Wellington to Sydney in the Awatea to-day. Silver Ring, who is now a nine-year-old, failed to show any form at the recent Grand National meeting. Airam , The Auckland-owned mare Airam has been placed on the schooling! list. •
