To study marine life in New Zealand an expedition is at present being planned in the United States on behalf of the American Museum of Natural History. Its objects will be to obtain specimens of striped and black marlin, mako shark and other large game fish. It will be financed by a wealthy American, who has conducted a number of such expeditions in many parts of the world. The project is referred to in a letter received by Mr M. H. Tisdall, of Auckland, from Mr Thomas Aitken, marine angling editor of an American sporting publication. It is possible that the specimens obtained may be embodied in a New Zealand section in the new oceanic hall of the American Museum of Natural History, New York. Mr Aitken seeks information regarding the fishing centres of the Dominion, and mentions in his letter the glowing opinions of the sport here circulated by Dr, R. L. Sutton, who recently fished at Mayor Island. It is hoped to obtain the co-operation of Government and museum officials in the Dominion in the work of the expedition, which will start from San Francisco early in December, according to present plans.
