“TWIN BURDENS ON PRODUCTION”
MANUFACTURERS* REPLY TO MR SAVAGE
(FBESS ASSOCIAHO* TXLIGEAU.) WELLINGTON, July 29. The New Zealand Manufacturers* Federation has issued the following statement:—“ The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) stated in an interview that our production gives no evidence of breaking down, therefore a slump can only happen when people
are unable to buy what they are able to produce. “We must point out. first that production is breaking down under the twin burdens of high costs and imports; second, that in consequence people are not only unable to buy what they produce—they are unable to produce. “Unless the Government take: remedial action New Zealand anil become a country of public works awl imports, and workers in industry wtU find that there is no place for them the national economy. It wul indeed be a hopeless position for the worker with a family when relief work replaces the pay envelope of the steady. permanent job in industry. No worker should be denied the privilege of »• lecting the market in which to awl «*s services.”
