THE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS

CANTERBURY’S PART DISCUSSED

MAYOR MEETS LOCAL BODIES

The attitude of local bodies, particularly those in South Canterbury, towards the extension of the Canterbury Museum as a centennial memorial is still doubtful, in the opinion of the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane) who, with Messrs W. S. Mac Gibbon and J. Roy Smith, vicechairman and secretary respectively of the Canterbury Centennial Court Committee, visited South Canterbury this week to discuss with representatives of local bodies the arrangements for the centennial celebrations in 1940. Mr Macfarlane hopes, however, that at the next meeting of the Canterbury Centennial Committee_ all the local bodies concerned will be in a position to state their attitude towards the museum project and the Canterbury Court proposal. Messrs Macfarlane, Mac Gibbon, and Smith visited Ashburton, Geraldine, Temuka, Timaru, and W,aimate. Mr Macfarlane said yesterday that most of the local bodies were considering the proposals in the following order: —(1) Whether they wished to subscribe to the Canterbury Court at the exhibition in Wellington; (2) whether they would subscribe to the compilation of a history of Canterbury; (3) whether they would subj scribe to a Canterbury memorial, sucll as improvements and extensions to the Canterbury Museum. It appeared that South Canterbury had made a more or less definite decision to have a South Canterbury court. However, the trip had been well worth while, and he thought that the object of a combined Canterbury court at the exhibition would be achieved. All the representatives of local bodies that had been met on the trip had been urged to make a special effort to be represented at the next meeting of the Canterbury Centennial Committee, so that it would be possible to find out definitely what views they had on the centennial projects.
