Lady Gay Loses Her Spectacles

Oh, dear! Oh, dear! Oh, dear! Lady Gay lost her spectacles. She had not worn them for so long that they were not missed. Then, when she wanted them they were nowhere to be found. Lady Gay hunted everywhere. She hunted high; she hunted low; she hunted in Mother Bunch's knitting bag; and in Aunt Amelia’s aerodrome; she looked underneath her desk; and sent Peter up on the roof. But she couldn’t find them anywhere. She wanted to be solemn, and serious, and most improving, and without spectacles she simply couldn’t manage it. All she could find was her “Box of Expensive Smiles,” and Expensive Smiles were not what she wanted. There were Smiles here, and Smiles there, and Smiles everywhere. But no spectacles anywhere. “Oh, deftr! What shall /. do?” sighed poor Lady Gay, sitting down at her typewriter and twisting her Smile to one side. It tickled her and she did want her spectacles. “I want to be solemn. I want to be improving. I want to talk in words of a dozen letters, like this : Phyjakmuyvrtxlouyzathy.” There are more than a dozen letters tn that word, and tt looks a bit queer, but L,aay Gay had lost her spectacles . In the long run she found them. Mtdge, tf you please, had turned them into a bow for Peter’s tail, and it took a long time to turn them back since Midge had forgotten the magic. She’s like that. A long time ago a mischievous elf cut her. memory short and she s never been able to grow it again. when Lady Gay found those spectacles she couldn t remember just why she had wanted to be. sad.
