NEWS FROM CHINA Shipmates’ Chocolate Box for Refugee Children

Some time ago, you will remember, Shipmates and Sunbeams joined together and sent a box of chocolate slabs to China to be distributed among the refugee children there. The following letter has now been received acknowledging the gift. It is a long way from peaceful New Zealand to the scene of war in the Hast, but all on board “The Press Ship” realise, a little at least, just how sad such hostilities are and are glad to do what they can to help the little ones who are suffering: — Chinese Young Women’s Christian Association,'* May 18, 1938. We received with thanks a tin of chocolate slabs through Miss Chung Wan Heung for the refugee children of Hong Kong. It is most encouraging to us in China to find that in this struggle against aggression we do not stand alone. We are deeply touched by all the acts and expressions of sympathy shown to China from all parts of the world, especially when we learn that even tiny children are denying themselves of pocket money to help their less fortunate brothers and sisters in China. We have more than 1000 refugees in Hong Kong and the number is swelling after the fall of Amoy. Miss Lo, one of our colleagues is in charge of the refugee work. Shb, will bo distributing the chocolate among the refugee children and will tell them of the kindness and thoughtfulness of friends who live far away in New Zealand. With best wishes. Yours faithfully, Wai Haan Choy (Assistant Secretary Y.W.C.A.),

If you cut 30 yards of cloth into one-yard pieces at the rate of one yard a day. how long will it take? Answer: Twenty-nine days. What two numbers multiplied together will produce seven? Answer: 7 and 1.

someone behind, calling to me. I turned round and saw it was a friend, at a distance of 400 yards, wanting to overtake me. We moved each of us 200 yards, with our faces towards each other, in a direct line, yet we were still 400 yards apart. This sounds impossible, but the truth is I walked 200 yards back-

IT WASN’T SO FUNNY

One day, when we were coming home from school, I saw some cows drinking at the river. I said, “It would be funny if there was a bull somewhere.” To our surprise there was a bull. When he saw us he chased us. We ran over the paddocks and came to a gate. We got over it and on to the road. Then we looked back and saw the bull still running after us. So we ran and ran until we reached our gate, —’MATE PAT, Eiffelton.
