MORE POPULATION

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—Now that the problem of more population is fairly on the way I should like to make the following suggestions. There are two august bodies trying to run this Dominion from the purely agrarian standpoint, viz., the Farmers* Union and the Women's Division. Judging by their platform one

is somewhat sceptical as to motiyes. We hear the continual harping on immigration, but very little about closer land settlement and State assistance. Mortgage companies and speculators will not solve a vital problem. Why not co-operate, encourage our secondary industries by rigid protection on what we can manufacture, advocating a restriction on the investment of British capital in foreign countries while integral parts of the Empire are in direst need of it. As nationalism still persists by tariff policies, we should do likewise and help build a self-con-tained Empire. Let them support our own best market, manufacture what we can and import what we cannot from our loyal protector, Britain. Yours, etc., GEORGE McCO RMICK. July 28, 1938.
