GRASS CHIPPING
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir, —As a grass chipper on rationed work for the Christchurch City Council, I would like to reply to “Patient Ratepayer’s” complaint about men leaning on their shovels, that “Patient Ratepayer” himself cannot have much to do than watch other people. All gangs that I know of have a regular council foreman with them, so they cannot get away with very much. A lot of these men are tradesmen and others are fit for only light work. Certain trades are slack just now. The Government finds our wages and I have paid taxes for years, long before relief work r tarted.—Yours, etc.. BIG RATEPAYER. July 29, 1938.
