RACING AND TROTTING

Xo stand his second season at GLADSTONE PARK STUD, ORARI, SOUTH CANTERBURY. The Imported Stallion MAN’S PAL (1) A classically bred and highly performed English horse from the famous Illuminata family through that great mare Chelandry. His family has bred >no less than 22 Classic winners. Sire, MANNA, winner of both the Two Thousand Guineas and the Derby (by ei<>ht lengths) and £23,534 in stakes, and sire, of COLOMBO (unbeaten at 1 vears and winner of the Two Thousand Guineas, etc.), MANNAMEAD “(unbeaten, and a very promising young sire), MIRACLE (unbeaten at 2 years and winner of the Eclipse Stakes, etc.), ARCHIDAMIA (winner of the Italian One and Two Thousand Guineas, the Oaks, and Derby, etc.), IHANKEKTON (winner of the Jersey Stakes, and third in the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby, etc.), MANITOBA, MANORITE, and a host of nther ’high-class horses. MANNA is jhe sire of the dam of PASCH, the best three-year-old in England this year, and he is also a half-brother to SANDWICH, winner of the Chester Vase, li miles, and King Edward VII Stakes. U miles, the St. Leger, and £l7 020. Manna is by the champion Sire. PH ALAR IS, from WAFFLES, the dani of two Classic winners and a grand-daughter of MARTAGON (the sire of Martian), and is doubly bred (o the great ST. SIMON. MAN’S PAL was a high-class racehorse, at 3 and 4 years winning at distances from 7 furlongs to li miles, and he was just beaten into second place in the Cambridgeshire in the second best field (40) on record, having behind him the pick of the handicap horses in England. MAN’S PAL was retired to the stud absolutely found. He is a half-brother to five winners, including the dam of FAIRFORD, winner of the Greenham Plate and favourite for the 1937 Derby, and since sold at a high figure for the stud in England. His dam is halfsister to Waygood, winner of the Irish Derby, etc. MAN’S PAL is one of the finest Individuals ever imported to New Zealand, and is a replica of the great Martian in type, but built on a more generous scale. He shows wonderful balance and quality, great substance, and has a perfect set of legs and feet. There is not a mark or blemish on him*, and, in the opinion of the late Captain Crawford, who selected him, he is one of the soundest horses in the world. His breeding is remarkable as, in addition to being by MANNA, his dam, PALMELLA, the dam and grand-dam of numerous high class winners, is by the Derby winner and champion sire, LEMBERG, whose daughters have also produced such great winners as Felstead (winner of the Derby and sire of Spion Kop), Short Story (Oaks), Mr Jinks (Two Thousand Guineas), etc., from ASCENSEUR, dam of Classic winners, halfsister to the successful sire, Syce, and -Amd-dam of the great American Gallant Sir, twice winner Agua Caliente Handicap, by wsptlt, winner of 20 races, value £lsy*i6, from the same family as Martian, Limond, Phalaris, etc., and sire of the dam of Gloaming, Paper Money, etc., from the great race mare, SKYSCRAPER, dam of six noted winners and sister to Samphire, dam of America’s great sire. Wrack, whose progeny have won over £500,000, and half-sister to Chersonese, dam of the Australian champion. Heroic, of Popinjay, dam of the great sire. Magpie, and the grand-dam of Book Law (dam of Rhodes Scholar), Book Debt (dam of Pay Up), etc. Ladas, Cicero. The Buzzard, etc., are all from this branch of the No. 1 family. Train Arrangements Special trains will leave Christchurch for the Riccarton Racecourse at 11 a.m., 11.30 a.m., and 12 o’clock to-day. Answer to Correspondents; Several inquiries were made yesterday from “The Press” as to whether Padishah had ever won a hurdle race. As stated earlier in the week Padishah has contested two hurdle races only in his career, one at Hastings, and the other at Awapuni, three years ago. He was unplaced in both, and has not started since as a jumper. At Riccarton Yesterday There was no track open for fast work at Riccarton yesterday, and the few horses exercised were worked on the sand, the majority being sent on the roads. Over Hurdles Silver Sight showed that he did not suffer from his fall on Thursday by jumping four hurdles in a dashing manner. He was ridden by F. Smith, but R. Register will have the mount on him to-day. A Clever Fencer Snowy Dawn (V. Langford) gave an attractive display over 'lO of the steeplechase fences, going straight into each one, and not showing any inclination to run off, as he has done in most of his races this winter. Arctic Star (N. Trillo) was sent out to jump five of the steeplechase fences, but failing to take off well at the first he fell, and was not further persevered with. He appeared to be saving his affected hind leg when going out, and as he returned in a lame condition, he is not likely to race to-day.

Riding To-day Riding engagements made for today are as follows:—W. Jenkins, Dictate, Comus, Lady Rosette, Stealamarch; C. Wilson, Sovereign Lady, Orange Bud, Black Coat; P. Burgess, Rockingham, Lone Raider, Chile; R. Register, Flashlight, Silver Sight; E. Finn, Top Row; A. Stokes, Riptide; N, Trillo, Bryce Street, Kilberis, Arctic Star; P. Spratt, Colonel Rouge; A. E.. Jennings, Conception; D. Mackie, Rebel Rank; M. Cassells, Roy Bun; V. Langford, Snowy Dawn, Dunmure, Corban; P Boyle, Surge, Bally Brit Black Banner; F. Baker, Nocturnus, Bit o’ Blue- H. Hibberd, Swordstick. Derive; A. Leach, Courtyard, High Speed; A. C. Messervy, Cape Gabo; J. Murfitt, Redolent, Recollection, Master Dingle, Gold Wren; A. Parsons, Bonvellum, Wine- Card. Potent, Maroha; G. Humphries, Paper Slipper, Mob Rule, Keen Sight; R, Beale, Fireguard, Brigadore; L. J. Ellis, Rebellion, Cocksure, Glenacre, Dracula; W. Cooper, Culverden; M. Caddy, Papernilla, Windward, Hunting Blood; G. Watson, Ponty, Wagner. A Good Proposition Studley Royal is to be offered for sale at the Grand National blood-stock sale. He has had an excellent record this season, his successes including the Dunedin Cup in February last, in which he beat a strong field of stayers. Studley Royal, who is a rising five-year-old gelding, by Paper Money from Red Queen, by All Red from Lady Victoria, by • Pilgrim’s Progress from Lady Lilian, a most successful family, is thoroughly sound and ready to be commenced on a spring preparation. Insured Against Rain The Christchurch Hunt Club has again insured to-day’s meeting against 10 points of rain falling between the hours of 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. Two years ago a similar policy was taken out, but the fixture had to be abandoned owing to a heavy fall of snow. Unfortunately for the club it was not able to collect the insurance, as although the snow was sufficient to put racing out of the question, it did not measure in water content up to the limit stated, and there was no rain in that period to assist in bringing up the total. No Rehandicaps An impression seems to prevail that winners of the three big races to-day will be liable to be rehandicapped for the corresponding races at the Grand National Steeplechase meeting. This will not be the case. Bracketed Black Coat and Grey Coat and Keen Sight and Wild Talk will be bracketed in the Maiden Stakes at Riccarton today. These will be the only brackets during the afternoon. By Rabbi Gleucos, in charge of A. J. Griflfen, of Blenheim, made his appearance at Riccarton yesterday. He is a wellgrown four-year-old gelding by Rabbi from the Masterpiece mare Clicquot, and is own'ed by his breeder. Mr C. O. T. Rutherford, of Blenheim. First Appearance Guapo, a contestant in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase at Riccarton to-day,_ will be having his first race. He is a seven-year-old gelding by Crown Star from an unknown dam. and is owned by Mr G. H. Loffhagen, of North Canterbury. owner of Top Rank. Guapo is a bold jumper, but naturally lacks experience. For Australia Bonvellum, who figures in the Maiden Stakes at Riccarton to-day, is a four-year-old unraced gelding by Paper Money from a Boniform mare, and is trained by D. O’Connor for Mr O. F. Watson, owner of Raeburn. He is likely to be taken to Australia with Raeburn early in September. Often Happens Very cheap yearlings occasionally come to light as big winners in England.- The Limelight Handicap, of £IOOO. one mile and a half, at Kempton Park, on June 4, was won by a six-year-old gelding named Stainless Stephen (Tremola—Beautiful Sun), who cost only 10 guineas as a yearling, in addition to other wins on the flat, Stainless Stephen has scored over hurdles. Starting at 20 to 1. he was

ridden in the Limelight Handicap by P. Maher, who has been very successful in important handicaps in England this season. American Champion War Admiral, whose last-moment withdrawal from the Suburbdh Handicap at Belmont Park (New York) at the end of May created so much adverse comment, ran in the Queen’s County Handicap, at Aqueduct (New York), a week later. There were attempts to boo and hiss him, but these were drowned by the cheers and handclapping of a larger section. There were only four starters, and War Admiral, who carried 9-6, and was at about 2 to 1 on, won by a length from Snark (9-0) in Imin 36 4-ssec for the mile, which is four-fifths of a second worse than the record for the track. The value of the race to the winner was £llO6. Big Figures Flemington’s toalisator turnover of £761,000 for 15 days this season was satisfactory without being sensational, writes “Pilot” in the “Referee.” It is ahead of Randwick with a greater number of days, but there is no Melbourne Cup day at the Australian Jockey Club headquarters. It is suggested that Flemington will reach the million mark within a few seasons. It would be strange if it did not. as though Randwick subsequently fell away, it reached that mark quite early in the piece. The increase at Flemington this season as compared with last was £47,278. English Totalisator Totalisator betting _ continues to increase in popularity in England. Last year the turnover at race meetings was £7,903,721, which was an increase of 7 27 per cent, over 1936. Of the amount mentioned, £2,149,225 was from off-the-course totalisator betting. The surplus to the Racecourse Betting Control Board, after providing for taxation, interest, and charity, was £318.i7b, against £292,581 in 1936. The sum of £150,000 was devoted to grants for horse breeding, racing and veterinary science, and education. Other grants included £54,128 for improvements in racecourses and accommodation for the public - £44,976 for increase in stake money, and £16,500 to the racing authorities to assist them in the duties of control. The fund for guaranteeing racecourses against loss in reduction of admission charges to the public has reached £15,982, and £10,127 has been set aside to assist owners in cost of transporting horses to race meetings.

Racing Association At a meeting of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Racing, Owners 1 , Breeders’, and Trainers Association the Hon. G. R. Hunter presided. The secretary advised that the agreement with the Stablehands’ Union had been signed. It would be necessary for all racing employers in the Canterbury district to sign the agreement. It was decided that any employer of stablehands refusing to sign the agreement would be reported to the District Committee. , Lieutenant-Colonel Stafford was appointed the association’s representative on the Remount Committee. Messrs A. Syme and H. Nurse were appointed the branch’s representatives on the Dominion Executive.

Accept-

ances have yet to be taken, but there is every prospect of good fields in every race. The long spell of unsettled weather has had its ?ffect in the preparation of horses, but the Addington track will be in capital order with even two days fine weather. Records are not usually looked for so early in the season as August, but the Addington track is in much better order than in previous years. This is due to the treatment it received last season and to the excellent work that has been done to it since. The National Handicap, which is decided on the concluding day, often shows up the best horse of the year, and several winners of this race have gone on to win the New Zealand Cup. A Southland Winner Voloma was the leading winner in Southland during the closing season, her earnings amounting to £460, says the Southland “Times.” In the little racing she has done the Adioo Guy mare has established a fine record for consistency, and when she contests the cup events in the new season she can be expected to make a name for herself. Voloma has yet to win over two miles, but she gives every promise of developing into a stayer of some ability. At Forbury Park in May she took a mile record of better than 2min lOsec. Voloma will be worked on the roads for a short time before being taken up by W. Cosgrove next month. It is understood that a good figure was offered by a Canterbury owner for Voloma, but apparently she is not for
