GOVERNMENT MEMBER’S ASSURANCE
«TOO MANY OWNERS A DANGER”
WELLINGTON, July 29An assurance to the OpposiUt* member for Eastern Maori, the HonSir Apirana Ngata, that the European did not wish to dispossess the Maori of his land was given by Mr E. X* Cullen (Government, Hawke s Bay). when speaking in the Budget debate in the House of Representatives today. However, Mr Cullen said, tow* were some acts which would have to be changed. The form of succession would have to be changed, for to-day there was fast dispossession nf native land in another form, which he let was not in the best interests of the native people. Mr Cullen gave ns an instance a case where there were 39J) owners of one block of 10 tfCltl y land. As the elders died, multiple ownership increased. _ That was a form of dispossession and it was a problem which the Government in the future would have to tackle. . . _ There was another area of 19 acres with 170 owners, and a further area ox 800 acres of bush with 570 owners. There were instances where one own* er might own 50 acres of land divided among different places all over tM Dominion. .
