AUSTRALIA WINS

SOMERSET CHEAPLY DISMISSED

MARGIN OF INNINGS AND 218 RUNS

(UKITED PEES 9 AS SOCIATIOS —COPTEICKT-> (Received July 30, 12.30 am.) LONDON, July 29. Australia won the cricket match against Somerset by an innings and 218 runs. In reply to 110 by Somerset. Australia made 464 for six, declared. Bradman’s contribution was « dazzling 202, his third double century on the present tour, Somerset, second innings, made 136. A handful of spectators gathered to see Somerset’s vain struggle to avoid an innings defeat. As it happened, Somerset’s fate was sealed within 25 minutes of the resumption of play, when the remaining batsmen were all out. Andrews was caught at the wicket off a “wrongun.”

Fleetwood-Smith was deadly and accurate, making the ball spin viciously, and had Wellard floundering, and then out leg before. In the next over he knocked out Barnwell’s leg stump. Luckes played on to the wicket. The tail-enders found Fleetwood-Smith unplayable. Hassett soon settled down and, with Bradman, scored much as he pleased. Only excellent fielding saved the bowlers from heavier punishment. Hassett, in attempting a hook, was caught at long leg, but Bradman, continuing strongly, reached the century in 145 minutes. When Chipperfield was bowled off his thigh, Bradman and McCabe became associated in a partnership of 129 runs for the sixth wicketFour Boundaries Hitting Buse for four boundaries in one over, Bradman scored 72 in an hour after lunch, runs coming at a riotous pace. The total of 400 was posted in 270 minutes, and Bradman reached the 200 mark after only 216 minutes. In attempting to hit a six in the same over Bradman was clean bowled. In a chanceless innings, which included 32 fours, he displayed glorious driving and great skin in placing, which dislocated the field. McCabe reached a graceful 50 in 65 minutes, and at tea, when the innings had been in progress 310 minutes, Bradman declared. ■When the Australians took the field an enthusiastic crowd followed Bradman to the wicket, to which a policeman escorted him. Lyon and Lee had to wait 10 minutes for the crowd to disperse before taking up their positions. With only six rims scored, however, the openers were back in the pavilion. Buse and Longrigg added 40 in a vigorous fourth-wicket partnership, and, after six were down for 80, Andrews and Barnwell batted stubbornly, helping to postpone defeat.
