DISPUTE TO BE REOPENED
MUCH DEBATED QUESTION FOR CITY COUNCIL MOTOR-CYCLES FOR TRAFFIC INSPECTORS At its last three meetings the Christchurch City Council has discussed at length whether it should buy British or American motorcycles for its traffic inspectors; and last Monday it affirmed its decision to buy five machines of British make. Following notice of motion given yesterday, however, by the chairman of the council's traffic committee (Cr. H. E. Denton), the question will come up, for the fourth time, at the next ordinary meeting of the council on August 15. The*purchase of motor-cycles for the traffic department was discussed for the first time by the council on June 13, when the traffic committee recommended that five American machines be bought. This was opposed, and the recommendation was referred back to the committee for reconsideration, several councillors claiming that British machines should be bought. The committee recommended to the next meeting, of the counail that five machines, American,' but of another make, be bought, but this proposal was rejected and a motion carried by a small majority to buy British machines. This decision, however, was contested at the last meeting of the council at the beginning of th;s week, when Cr. A. C. Sandston moved that the council buy American machines of the make favoured by the committee in its second recommendation; but the motion was lost by two votes. Now Cr. Denton has given notice of his intention to move that the council's decision to buy a certain make of British machine be rescinded and that the committee be instructed to submit a recommendation for the purchase of five machines of a make to be decided on by the committee.
