MAGISTRATE'S COMMENT ON OFFENCE
MAN PLACED ON PROBATION (PRESS AMOCIATIOX TXLBQRAH.) AUCKLAND, July 28. '•'This case shows how easily business people can be taken down. They almost encourage people to swindle them," said Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today. The Magistrate said he reluctantly extended probation to Allen James Thorburn, aged 50, who pleaded guilty to five charges of obtaining sums totalling £2O by means of valueless cheques. "It seems to be getting easier every year," said Detective-Sergeant McHugh. "As long as a man has a plausible tongue and is well dressed, -they hand the money over easily." Thorburn told the Magistrate he was temporarily short of money, and was expecting money to be paid into his bank. _.
