returns for three MONTHS WEST COAST LEADS OTHER PROVINCES During the three months ended June 30 gold won on the West Coast and entered for export amounted to 16,753 ounces, the highest provincial total in ♦he Dominion. Augustus Venning was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs for driving a motor-lorry at Westport without a certificate of fitness, and for not taking out a heavy traffic licence he was fined £1 and ordered to pay costs. For driving motor-lorries without warrants of fitness, David Fairley (Waimangaroa) was fined £1 and ordered to pay costs, and William Mann (Denniston) was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs. Maurice Clayworth, a youth, was fined 10s, and ordered to pay costs for driving a motor-cycle without a certificate of fitness. For allowing cattle to stray at Westport, Mrs A McManus and Thomas Hannah were both fined £1 and ordered to pay costs. John McCarthy was fined £1 10s and ordered to pay costs on a charge of allowing five steers to stray near Tiromoana. On a charge of allowing cows to stray on the Buller Gorge road. Norman Archer was fined £1 and ordered to pay costs. OBITUARY MR JAMES B. PATON The sudden death of a well-known resident of Greymouth, Mr James Blane Paton, local manager of the Shell Oil Company, took place early yesterday morning at his residence in Nelson street, Karoro. Mr Paton, who had lived in Greymouth lor the last 11 years, is survived by his wife and five children. Born at Boness, Scotland, in 1876, Mr Paton came Jo New Zealand 40 years ago, and in 1927 came to the West Coast. Mr Paton, who fought in the Great War and was wounded at Gallipoli, was a member of the Greymouth branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, a past president of the Westland Football Association, a vice-president of the Greymouth Boxing and Wrestling Association, a member of the committee of the Physical Fitness Centre, and a member of the Karoro 'Bowling Club. The ftineral will take place to-mor-row at Christchurch.
