* WEDNESDAY (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.) THEFT OF POSTAL NOTE Alfred Chambers (Mr H. W. Thompson) was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months for stealing a postal note for 5s and four penny stamps, the property of Frank Hirstich. Repayment of 5s 4d within seven days was ordered. Detective-Sergeant Sinclair said that the complainant had given the accused money to buy a postal note and stamps to send to Tasmania. Later it was found that it had not been sent. The accused had cashed the postal note in Auckland. Mr Thompson said that Chambers suffered from war disabilities. His action had been a foolish one. He had taken the money to buy cigarettes, which were the only things that soothed his nerves. D. Drake) of taking salmon out of season, was fined £2 10s and ordered to pay costs. TROUT OUT OF SEASON Arthur Elmers was fined £2 and ordered to pay costs for taking trout out of season. William Robert Jeffery was also fined £2 and ordered to pay costs on a similar charge. Douglas le Comte (Mr H. P. Smith) was fined 20s and ordered to pay costs on a similar charge. The charges were brought by the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society (Mr M. J. Gresson). BREACH OF DRAINAGE REGULATIONS On a charge brought by the Christchurch Drainage Board (Mr Wyn ‘ Cowlishaw), G. E. Parker was ordered to pay costs and counsel’s fee for allowing rain water to be discharged into a sewer. WATER ADDED TO MILK A fine of £5, with payment of costs, was imposed on Albert James Partridge for selling milk to which water had been added, on a charge brought by the Health Department (Inspector T. Pargeter). The defendant stated that he had bought the milk in the condition in which he sold it. NEW BRIGHTON TRAFFIC CASES Fines, with payment of costs, were imposed as follows on charges brought by the New Brighton Borough Council (Inspector F. Blewitt):— Parking in prohibited area—John Golding, 10s. Failing to keep to left and having no warrant of fitness—Arthur C. Harris, 20s (first charge): 10s (second charge). Having no warrant of fitness and failing to produce driver’s licence — Rangi Solomon, 5s (first charge), 10s (second charge). Having no warrant of fitness—Ronald A. Smith, 10s. CHARGE OF FAILING TO STOP The hearing of a case in which Harold Edward Bell (Mr C. S. Thomas) was charged with failing to stop his car after an accident in which two persons were injured was adjourned till August 18. Sub-Inspector W. E. Packer said that the police would prefer that the defendant should be remanded, but the Magistrate said that as it was a summons case there would have to be an adjournment. Mr Thomas said that there was no question of liquor and that the defendant had gone to the police and reported the matter when he found that fiis car was damaged. (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.) Edward Tolhurst, charged with driving a motor-cycle in a manner which might have been dangerous to the public, was fined £5. He was prohibited from obtaining a licence for six months. For driving an unregisistered motor-cycle, he w r as fined £3, and for giving a false name to the traffic inspector he was fined £l. Charged with driving a motor-cycle at night without lights, he was fined £l, and for not holding a driver’s licence or a warrant of fitness he was fined 10s on each charge.

Robert J. Smith, for driving a motorcar along the Beach road without having the vehicle licensed, was fined £5, and for driving the car without holding a driver’s licence or warrant of fitness was fined 10s on each charge. Bernard V. Tully, charged with driven unlighted spring dray at night along the Main North road, was fined £2. For driving an unlicensed motorcar, George G. Andrews was fined 20s. Alexander C. Naismith, for failing to report an accident to the police when ■ riding a motor-cycle, was fined 20s.
