CALLS TO FIRES

FIFTEEN ANSWERED BY BRIGADE MEETING OF BOARD AT TIMARU Fifteen calls were answered by the Timaru Fire Brigade from March 31 till yesterday, according to a report presented to the quarterly meeting of the Timaru Fire Board by the superintendent (Mr E, W. McCann). Mr William C. Raymond presided. Giving details of the calls, the report said that there was one electric motor lire, one stove fire, one hedge lire, three motor-cars, six chimneys, and three calls for special service—one to pump -water from a shingle pit in the Levels County , one to pump water from a transformer station in Stafford street, and one to stop escaping- ammonia in a refrigerator plant. It was decided to convert the mens kitchen into a sitting room. SUCCESSFUL CONCERT AT MORVEN SCHOOL COMMITTEE TO BENEFIT A concert and dance in aid of the funds of the Morven School a»d Waihao Basketball Club was held in the Morven Hall recently. The first section of the programme was given by flic pupils of the school. The items were as follows; —Songs by the school choir, recitations by Maggie Benson, Gladys Clearwater, Clare Sutherland. Echo Tewhao, and Colin Mills, piano solos by Audrey Cross. Several, sketches and a maypole dance were also presented. The second part of the programme was giver, by members of the basketball team and visiting artists. It included lap dances by Miss Betty Kaan and Miss Gladys Lange, a Russian dance by Miss Roberts, a recitation by Miss Mavis Heath, and songs by Messrs H. Apes, Maiharoa, Wesley, and Whitau. Mr E. S. Marshall, chairman of the school committee, thanked the performers and others who had helped to make the evening a success. MOTOR DRIVERS’ LICENCES Up till yesterday morning 396 motordrivers’ licences had been issued for the 1938-39 year by the Waimate Borough Council. The number issued at the same time last year was 370. FARMER FALLS OFF DRAY W. Cain, of Seadown. suffered slight injuries to a leg in an accident on the Seadown road yesterday. He was standing on a spring dray, and putting on his coat,, when the horse moved forward, the sudden lurch of the dray sending him off his balance.
