ANIMAL RESEARCH WORK
SITE OF LABORATORY DISCUSSED RESOLUTION PASSED BY FARMERS’ UNION Strong support for the view that the new research laboratory to deal with animal problems should be located at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, rather than in Christchurch, was expressed in a resolution carried by the North Canterbury executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union yesterday. The resolution, which came forward as a remit from the Hororata branch, was sponsored by Mr J. W.. D. Hall. It read as follows: “That the Farmers’ Union is in full accord with the resolution passed by the Canterbury Agricultural College Board of Governors on July 12, as follows:—‘That the board views with concern the proposal to set up a separate laboratory in Christchurch to deal with animal problems. In the interests of economy and efficiency it considers the work should be done at Lincoln College, and it is desirable that means should be provided to strengthen the present staff by the appointment of a pathologist and other research workers.’ ” Speaking to the resolution, Mr Hall said that excellent research work into animal problems —sheep problenivS in particular—had been carried out by the college in the past—in spite of such handicaps as lack of a staff pathologist and shortage of funds. It was considered that the college was the right place for the work to be done. The resolution was not to be taken, said Mr Hall, as an objection to the plan to have the new research laboratory. It would be better to have it' in Christchurch than not to have one at all, but it was considered that Lincoln College was the right place for the work. The resolution was carried after some discussion. •
