PARKING PLACES IN CITY

♦ POSSIBLE PROVISION BY COUNCIL AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION APPROVES SURVEY The investigation by the traffic committee of the Christchurch City Council of sites that might be suitable for municipally-controlled parking places is pleasing to the council of the Automobile Association (Canterbury). At a meeting of the council of the association last night, a motion was carried, by seven votes' to six, congratulating the City Council on having already begun a survey of areas with a view to carrying out its power to establish parking places for motorcars. This decision was made on the suggestion of Mr F. W. Johnston, who moved: “That this council expresses its satisfaction with the passing of the Municipal Corporations Amendment Act, 1938, which authorises municipalities to take, purchase, or acquire land or buildings for the purposes of parking places and to lake such steps as may bo necessary to let these places for parking with or without charge; and congratulates the Christchurch City Council on having already taken the initial steps towards having a survey of the position with a view to carrying cut its powers under the amending act.” Mr Johnston said that the provision of parking places was a civic responsibility, and in Christchurch there wore many sites that could be used by» the municipal authorities. It was improper, he added, for the City Council to drive motorists off the street without providing parking places for them. Mr F. W. Ficeman said that Christchurch was less affected by parking problems than any other main city in New Zealand, and he would hesitate to support any motion that would tend to impose unnecessary expense on the ratepayers. Adequate facilities for parking already existed, it motorists would park their cars out-
