YOUNG FARMERS’ TOUR

PARTY OF SIXTY VISITS NORTH ISLAND MANY POINTS OF INTEREST . After an enjoyable and instructive tour of the North Island, which extended over 15 days and covered about 1400 miles, a parly of 60 young farmers of North Canterbury returned to Christchurch yesterday morning. Numerous farms were visited, and among the points o£ interest were the all-grass methods of farming, largely followed in the north, the heavy application of fertilisers in Taranaki and Waikato, the use of timber for fencing (except in Taranaki, where boxthorn fences predominate), and the general high carrying-capacity of much of the land. The party, which was urider . the direction of Mr F. A. Sheat, of Horrelville (president), and Mr L. W. Black.r.oro, of Christchurch (secretary), was favoured with good weather for most of the trip, and was met and entertained by club members and representatives of the Department of Agriculture at various places. Other features of the tour were the Maori welcome at the historic Turu-turu-Mokai redoubt, and visits to the Waitomo Caves, Massey Agricultural College, the Arapuni hydro-electric scheme, Rotorua, and the Wallacevillo laboratory. Interest was also shown in the Ford motor assembly works at Petone. It is intended to hold a reunion of members of the party soon.
