* HEAVY RAIN Heavy rain, which set in at Lyttelton early yesterday morning, continued all day. The ground in all parts is now waterlogged and creeks and streams arc full. Several more slips have occurred, most of them small, but it is feared that a continuance of the rain will lead to slips of a more serious nature. Street Lamps Damaged The wilful breaking of street lamps by shots from airguns has caused the Borough Council considerable expense lately. During last week-end four lamps in Park terrace were broken in this manner, and another in Hawkhurst road. The council has placed the matter in the hands of the police, and an appeal is made to residents to report broken lamps. Magistrate's Court Mr F. F. Reid, S.M., presided at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. For selling liquor after • hours, Lionel M. Denton, licensee of the Mitre Hotel, who pleaded guilty, was convicted and fined 40s and ordered to pay costs. Henry Laurie* and William John Kent, for being on licensed premises after hours, were each convicted and fined 20s and ordered to pay costs. Judgment -for the plaintiff, by default, was given in the following civil cases:—Forbes, Ltd. (in liquidation; v. Thomas Reardon, £9 14s; same v. Michael Reardon, £1 2s 6d; same v. King Reardon, 16s; same v. J. Reardon, £1 2s 6d; same v. S. Ellis, jun., £1 2s 6d; same v. David Delaney, £2 12s 10d; Mary and Reuben Whitford v. George Harding, 8s 6d; same v. William Thompson, £1 Is 9d. Personal At Purau House, the home of Mr and Mrs Frank Gardiner, the transharbour parishioners of St. Saviour’s, Lyttelton, recently entertained the Rev. E. E. Malden and Mrs Malden. An interesting competition was won by Mrs Arthur Gardiner and Mrs lan Gardiner. After afternoon tea, Mrs Alex Gardiner, for Purau, and Mr W. Paine, for Diamond Harbour, voiced the regret of all at the departure of Mr Malden from the parish, and presented him, on behalf of those present, with a smokers’ outfit. PORT JACKSON AT LONDON The Port Jackson, which left Auckland on Juno 22, arrived at London on Sundaymorning. KARETU DUE THIS MORNING The Karetu, en route from Newcastle, reported last evening that she would arrive at Lyttelton at 10 o’clock this morning.
